I bet Sister Mary DePayze could shut down the spammers.

Please play this YouTube video while you read this column. It will make spam all the more annoying.

Right now there are 17,713 spam e-mails in my spam folder.

Damn spam!

It wastes your time. It carries germs - viruses and worms. It can kill your email system. And it is getting worse every day - or so it seems.

What can you do about it?

As far as I can tell, I can't do anything about it. And I own the darn mail server - or at least pay to control it.

Do You Know ANY OF These People?

Clare McGhee, Jesus Murray, Mike Woods, Carlos Perry, Maude Stringer, Mari Barnhart, Matthew Nelson?

Right now there are 17,714 spam e-mails in my spam folder.

These names (and more and more and more names just like them) are appearing in my G-Mail inbox almost daily and often more than once a day -- AS SPAM E-Mail.

What I can't figure out is why Google's Mail Server (G-Mail) can't get a grip on this most recent wave of spam. (17,715)

Mostly, these e-mails are nothing more than a distraction and easy to mark as "spam" and send off to the "spam folder."

I keep spam for 30 days. And then allow G-Mail to dispose of it. So, I always have 30 days worth of spam in the "spam bin."

A few months ago, the count of spam e-mails in the folder rose to 21,000+ ---- or about 700 per day.

Right now there are 17,716 spam e-mails in my spam folder.

Less than a month ago, the spam count was down to just under 11,000. Now it's back up to 17,717 - as I type this sentence.

What a pain in the butt.

Back in the 4th grade at St. James, there was a certain Sister of Charity - Sister Mary DePayze (Pronounced: DEE-PAA-ZEE.) Big woman. Nasty. Scary. Makes me Shiver just to think about her . . . .

When anyone was "out of line," Sister DePayze would take the bad boy by the ear into the coat-room and whack him across the knuckles with a really thick yardstick. She broke a lot of yardsticks every year.

I got whacked once. I was always a quick learner. Never happened to me again.

I bet if Sister DePayze could get her hands on these spammers, she would put an end to it.

And if not Sister DePayze, then maybe the Death Penalty.

Right now there are 17,718 spam e-mails in the spam folder.

This REALLY needs to be stopped.

Gee OJ, you're older than I thought! I had Sr. Mary Depazzi (correct spelling) in 4th grade 1950. I vividly remembering her calling us "hot tamales and devils on wheels!!!" My parents were expecting their 9th child that year and already had 8 girls! Every morning for about a month she would call me up to her desk and ask if mother had had her baby. So finally on March 8th I was able to relay the news that yes mother had a new baby BOY! The Sisters of Charity were excellent teachers. Still are! Thanks for remebering one of them. Thanks for the feedback . . . (And the spelling correction) -- Did you have 4th grade in the little "motor home" classroom that sat alongside the gym? Remember "DPW" . . . DePazzi's Poor Workers? . . . That what we called ourselves when we had to clean up the schoolyard during recess . . .

I remember Sr. Depazzi but I was lucky enough not to have her. She used to send students to the County Bldg to ride up and down in the elevators to sell raffle tickets on whatever was being raffled off that week. The term DPW made me smile also.
