LANSING - Senator Jim Barcia (D-Bay City) today officially accepted the chairmanship of the newly formed Senate Committee on Hunting, Fishing and Outdoor Recreation. The long time hunter and outdoor enthusiast thanked Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop (R-Rochester) for his willingness to reach across the aisle and tap him for this important post.
"I am excited about taking on this new challenge and working with my colleagues in both parties to build consensus and promote and preserve our rich outdoor heritage in Michigan," said Barcia. "While there are always contentious issues where Republicans and Democrats will disagree, maintaining clean and accessible recreation areas, allowing fishing and hunting to thrive and ensuring that all of these activities contribute to our economic growth, are important to a broad cross section of members in the Senate. I am very grateful to Senator Bishop for the confidence he has placed in me. His decision shows the kind of bi-partisan, common sense leadership we need to move our state forward."
Senator Bishop offered praise for Barcia's approach as a legislator.
"I hold Senator Barcia in high regard. He is a legislator who can put sound public policy before partisan politics. Senator Barcia sees the wisdom of working in a bipartisan fashion to help move Michigan forward. I wish him the best in his new position."
Throughout his more than 30 year career in public service Barcia has earned a reputation for his moderate, bi-partisan approach and ability to work with members of both parties to solve problems. An avid hunter, Barcia authored numerous laws at the state and federal level to protect hunting rights and the 2nd amendment and has received many awards from prominent hunting and outdoor organizations.
While serving in Congress, Barcia was an active member of the Sportsmen's Caucus and founded and co-chaired with Duncan Hunter (R-California) the Bow Hunting Task Force.
