Family plot of James G. Birney in Groveland, Livingston County, New York.
Photos of the graves of the James G. Birney family have been obtained by a history researcher, Mary Hewes Hinds, of Owosso.
She is also seeking the burial place of Capt. James G. Birney IV, hero at Gettysburg, recently honored by the Bay City community.
"We are getting close," said Mrs. Hinds, regarding the burial place of the Civil War hero from Bay City who died tragically of disease at age 26 at Ft. Davis, Texas.
Meanwhile, she has gotten new information on the Birney familymembers who are buried in the family plot in Williamsburg Cemetery, Hampton Corners, town of Groveland, Livingston County, New York.
The research has brought to light the fact that James G. Birney and his second wife, Elizabeth Fitzhugh, had a daughter, Ann Hughes Birney, who was born Nov. 27, 1843 in Bay City. The child died March 8, 1846, just over two years of age.
Burials in the Birney family plot in the Williamsburg Cemetery are four: James G. Birney, born Feb. 4, 1792 in Danville, Kentucky, died Nov. 25, 1857 at Eaglewood, New Jersey; Elizabeth P. Fitzhugh, wife of James G. Birney, died Jan. 12, 1869, aged 66 years; Ann Hughes Birney, daughter of James G. and Elizabeth Birney, born Nov. 27, 1843 in Bay City, died Mar. 8, 1846; and Maj. Fitzhugh Birney, 2nd Division, II Corps, Army of the Potomac, born Jan. 9, 1842 at Saginaw, died July 17, 1864, Washington, D.C.
