The Pinconning Spartans varsity football team took on the Tawas Braves in a Friday night match-up. This well matched, well played game was a nail-biter down to the wire.
In the end, the Tawas Braves scored late in the game and squeaked by with a 27-21 victory over the Pinconning Spartans.
The first quarter started strong for the Spartans. Senior defensive back Matt Leppect stopped the Tawas Braves from scoring and gained control of the ball for the Spartans.
But an incomplete pass and a penalty for a personal foul gave the ball back to the Braves who then went on to score the first touchdown of the contest.
Before the end of the quarter, a Braves' drive was stopped by Spartan player Lucas Foco, a junior who plays both tight end and line backer. Foco stopped the drive with a well-executed tackle.
In the second quarter, the teams continued to battle. An incomplete pass by the Spartans was picked up by the Braves, who went on to score their second touchdown. But after getting the ball back, Foco of the Spartans scored their first touchdown and they added the extra point.
The third quarter was full of flags, penalties, and tackles. But tackles didn't stop the Braves from scoring their third touchdown and getting the extra point. When the Spartans got control of the ball, they gave the Braves a run for their money. Nicholas Schultz, ran for over 40 yards to score the Spartans' second touchdown and added a successful two point conversion.
The fourth quarter started off promising for the Spartans. A long run by Schultz produced a touchdown for the Spartans, and the game was suddenly tied.
But the Braves scored again on the next possession and then managed to fend the Spartans off until the clock ran out.
Despite the 27 to 21 loss, the Spartans held their own against the Braves and made it an entertaining game to watch.
