For the Cougars it was a sight for sore eyes to see their ecstatic fans packing the bleachers to watch them take on the Vulcan's of Vassar. With flags waving, chests painted, and signs raised high the Cougar fans cheered their hearts out for their team. The coin was tossed and the Cougars would start off the night on defense.

For anyone hailing from All Saints, it was a slap in the face to see the Vulcan's return end with an 85 yard touchdown. But as it would turn out that slap in the face was what the Cougars needed to get them started. Just minutes after Vassar marked their six points on the board the Cougars would follow suit with a touchdown of their own.

But the Cougars were just getting warmed-up. Seconds later with the Vulcan's on offense a decisive tackle by #71 Brad Sinicki forced the Vulcan's to punt the ball away. With three minutes left in the first quarter a terrific run from #24 Aaron Janer once again put the Cougars within striking distance; and #11 Kevin Bisel wasn't about to disappoint the hopeful fans.

Crashing through the Vulcan's defensive line, Bisel punched in another touchdown that was soon followed by a successful two-point-conversion run by Janer. Apparently the two touchdowns had taken their toll on the Vulcan's because, soon after getting the ball back in their possession, once again turned it over on downs. With 23 second on the clock the Cougars began another drive down the field without any sign of letting up.

The second quarter went just as well as the first. Two minutes into the start of the second quarter the Cougars tacked six more points onto their score along with the extra point. So once again the ball was handed back to the stunned Vulcan's who obviously didn't expect this kind of power from such a small team; but they didn't hold onto it for long.

Just minutes later the Cougars unbeatable defense stopped the Vulcan's in their tracks and, yet again, got the ball back on downs. Surging down the field the Cougars were finally stopped just feet away from the goal line and with the play at 4th and 11 they decided to kick the field goal. With the score now at 24-6 time expired on the first half and both teams headed to the locker rooms.

After another beautiful routine from the Cougar pom team it was on to more football action. Because the Vulcan's had started out on offense it was time for them to return the favor by letting the Cougar start out the second half on offense. Like nothing, the Cougars blazed down the field to easily score another touchdown to make the score an amazing 31-6; but the Vulcan's had finally found themselves an were ready to fight back.

Even with the Cougar fans cheering them on, the Cougars seasoned defenders were unable to hold the determined Vulcan's back this time. The Vulcan's succeeded in scoring their second touchdown of the night, along with the extra point. Unfortunately for the Cougars the Vulcan's weren't done yet.

Mere minutes later, after the Vulcan defense trampled over the Cougars stunned offense, the Vulcan's ran in another touchdown and tacked on the extra point with only 27 seconds left in the game. Suddenly the score was 31-20 and with a quarter to go the Vulcan's were within sight of a comeback victory.

A comeback victory on the Cougars home field? No chance! The Cougars weren't about to let the Vulcan's push them around anymore. As Senior Kevin Bisel would later state, the Cougars "countered the Vulcan's with their own running" and stopped the Vulcan's dead in their tracks. If shutting down the Vulcan's offense wasn't enough for the Cougar fans, a touchdown and extra point with four minutes to go sure was.

The Cougars had successfully shut down the Vulcan's and now their victory was complete. To chants of 'When the Saints go Marching in' the last seconds ticked away and the Cougars captured their second win of the season.

Hours before this epic showdown began the Cougar student body had held a pep-rally to get fired up for the game. It was at this pep rally that Coach Bisel boldly predicted that "sparks are gonna fly tonight". Apparently Coach Bisel's prediction came true. The Cougars played "a terrific game because they had to - because Vassar is a big team" as Coach Bisel said after the game was over.

The Cougars will play again at home next week, this time facing off against the Hatchets from Bad Axe.
