Looking to make their record an incredible 4-1, the All Saints Cougars arrived at Laker field expecting a tough game ahead; and they were right. All night the Cougar defenders labored to hold back the Lakers unstoppable offense, and with a few lucky breaks thrown into the mix the Cougars came very close to defeating the undefeated Lakers.

After the coin toss put the Cougars into defensive status the Lakers began the night on a sour note. Hardly three plays into their opening drive and the ball was snatched away from them on a fumble recovery by the Cougars.

Things were looking up as the Cougar offense hit the field to replace their defensive counterparts. Only seconds after the ball placed in Cougar hands, Josh Sutton QB proved why you never can underestimate the Cougars when he broke through the Lakers defensive line and rushed down the field for an 85 yard touchdown. Things couldn't have been going better for the Cougars as #32 Brett Campbell tacked on the extra point to make the score 7-0 for the Cougars.

Reluctantly the Cougars kicked the ball away so the vengeful Lakers could began their next drive. With six minutes left on the clock the Cougar defense held the powerful Laker offenders back, but as time expired the Lakers were near the ten yard line.

The second quarter began with a slap in the face to the Cougars. The Lakers would easily race past the entrenched Cougars to score their own touchdown with the invaluable extra point to tie the game. Then the Lakers sturdy defenders stopped the Cougar offense dead in their tracks. With the ball turned over on downs, the Laker's humbling offense went back to work on racking up their score, and they didn't have long to wait. Only minutes after scoring their last touchdown, the Lakers stunning offense blasted in another crushing touchdown with the extra point. The game now appeared to be in the hands of the Lakers with a score of 14-7.

But the Cougars weren't done yet. Surprising everyone at Laker field, Cougar #1 Josh Sutton threw the ball past the defenders where it was caught by the waiting arms of #85 BJ Weaver and was ran the rest of the way for a 68 yard touchdown pass. The Cougars had just got themselves back in the game.

With four minutes still remaining in the first half, the first of many defensive stands by the Cougars took place. It took the Lakers offense a few minutes to work the ball down the field but with a meager minute still left on the clock the Cougars would have to make their stand now, or let the Lakers take the lead at the end of the half.

The Lakers continued to move the ball closer and closer towards the goal line, however that was when the Cougars got lucky. One of the Referees was forced to throw a member of the chain-gang (the people who mark where the lines of skirmish are) out of the game, resulting in lost time and a 15 yard penalty to the Lakers team. With the Lakers now only holding enough time for one last play they decided to go for the touchdown, rather than the field goal. However, as time ran out on the Lakers drive, the Cougar defenders held the Lakers where they were. The game would stay tied 14-14 at the end of the first half.

After a great halftime show provided by the Laker High School Marching Band, it was back to business. The third quarter can only be described as a defensive nightmare for both teams. The Cougar offense found their opponents anticipating their plays, and therefore the All Saints offensive players weren't able to connect on any of their drives. Similarly, the Cougar defense was having trouble of their own. No matter what they did, the Laker offense was always one step ahead of them; it was only thanks to some lucky plays and a timely interception that the Lakers weren't able to score. The uneventful third quarter however, only paved the way for the explosive fourth quarter.

Starting out on offense, the Cougars knew it was time to do-or-die. #24 Aaron Janer would prove his worth when he was able to find a gap in the Lakers defensive wall and race down the field to score his 58 yard touchdown. Add on the extra point and the Cougars now had the upper hand at 21-14. But with 11:32 left on the clock, they still had a lot more work to do.

Hoping to capitalize on the time still remaining in the game, the Lakers once again, almost effortlessly, worked the ball down the field deep into Cougar territory. Blasting the Cougars hope for a win, the Lakers not only scored another touchdown but pulled off a two-point-conversion to make the score 22-21.

With seven minutes still on the clock, the Cougars knew they had to get the ball within field-goal range. The desperate Cougars offense managed to get the ball within field-goal range, but decided to go for the touchdown instead. With the Cougars near the one yard line, victory seemed to be within their grasp. Unfortunately a disastrous fumble on the one yard line was recovered by the now ecstatic Lakers.

With the ball back in Laker hands, they broke through the exhausted Cougar defense and scored another touchdown. With the score at 28-21 and about two minutes left on the clock, the spent Cougars were two fatigued to get very far on their drive and stalled around midfield where, to the Laker fan's chants of "warm up the bus", the game finally came to a bitter end. While heading towards the bus, Coach Bisel would lament "we just didn't come prepared to play".

Despite this bitter loss, the Cougars will take on their old rivals the Cass City Red Hawks next Friday at the All Saints Homecoming game. To kick off Homecoming week the girls of All Saints will compete against each other in the Powder Puff game Sunday Sept 28th.
