Cancer, a word we don't want to hear. But for too many people, it is a word that has impacted our family's lives. On October 7, the Frankenmuth High School volleyball team with be joined by the Garber High School team in sponsoring Frankenmuth's second annual "Volley for a Cure 2008."

"Volley For the Cure is a funfair and awareness of breast cancer," noted organizer and coach of Frankenmuth volleyball team, Sharon Bade. "This year we joined up with Relay for Life. The donations go nationally. The t-shirt sales will go to Relay for Life with a portion of the gate and auction going to breast cancer research, probably the Susan Coleman foundation."

Posters and advertising is all over town.

The event will be centered around a Tri-Valley match between Frankenmuth and Garber. "This will be our second time we are doing it," noted Coach Bade. "We decided to pick Garber because it would be a tough match this year. Hopefully the support will be there for both schools because it's an emotional night for the kids. They are playing for someone that means so much to them and it's a great volleyball with two great teams playing each other."

An emotional night it will be as Coach Bade uses this event to help her players become more aware of community needs and the impact such support can have on people's lives.

"It's a ton of emotions all in one, because it means that you're playing for someone that means something to you. The kids will be playing with a name on the back of their shirts of someone they know that has cancer or is a survivor of cancer or someone that touched them in someway of their lives that has cancer.

The player has already chosen whom they want on their shirt. They will do a write up on that person and what that person means to them. There will be ceremony before the game the players will talk a little of who they have on the back of their shirt. Then the announcer will give a bit more info on the person as well. It also brings a lot of awareness to high school kids of what is really going on out there, of the illnesses that they fight day-to-day. It will be a great night and will be getting a lot of fan support."

The purpose of the event is to not only heighten awareness to cancer and in particular, breast cancer, but to raise money for medical research. "Without funding these researches, medical researchers are forced to move slowly and thus discovering a cure will take longer to find. But with help from private and public donations from people, it helps to bring a possible cure a little bit closer," said Coach Bade.

Last year they raised over $4000 as they kicked off this annual event with North Branch High School. Among other things, they sold pink t-shirts. "We had about 1400 people whom showed up for the game which was against us and North Branch. It was a neat feeling coming into the gym and see the stands full of pink shirts, bright pink for Frankenmuth and dull pink for North Branch. Our kids have never played in front of a group that big before. It was something those kids will never forget."

Action will be fast and furious when Essexville Garber and Frankenmuth battle it out on October 7.

Garber's volleyball team is looking forward to it too. They have been selling t-shirts as well as getting support from Bay Medical Regional Center and encouraging WIOG and WNEM to cover this event.

This year's event starts at 6:00 pm with the freshman and JV games. The featured varsity match is scheduled to start at 7:30 but you will want to get there sooner to enjoy the whole event. "Some of the activities that we will be having is Cut for the Cure, which we will have someone come in there (local professional) with four chairs set up so that they get their hair cut for only five dollars. We are going to be selling T-shirts at the game, a silent auction and also a 50/50 drawing."

Coach Bade also noted you can buy t-shirts ahead of time by contacting either Frankenmuth or Garber schools or their coach ahead of time. "The silent auction is great. We get great support from the community and businesses in town. We probably made about $1200 dollars off the auction (last year) which was quickly created in a week. We get a great turn out from the school and the community. If someone wants to donate to the silent auction they can either call me or contact the schools and they will give them my number. My cell number is 989-239-9874 and they can call me and we can set up arrangements to pick up what they want to donate to the auction, and give them a receipt for it."
