Here come the Cougars!

There is no better example of spirit than that of an All Saints Homecoming; and this one, the 40th Homecoming, was sure to be a memorable one. With Past Kings, Queens, and uncountable Alum rejoining the Cougar family, it is fair to say that the Cougar Field has never known such spirit as it did Friday night.

Beginning with the massive parade, which featured returning royalty, floats, and this years court, the celebration of Homecoming was kicked-off in style.

For the fans, friends, and family that packed Cougar's home stadium, there were many reasons for their being there; but of all these reasons, all were secondary to seeing the Cougar Varsity team take on the Cass City Red Hawks.

Ranked seventh in the state for Class C, the undefeated Red Hawks were no easy adversary for the Homecoming game; and nothing short of each Cougar playing at his best would be enough to overthrow the powerful Hawks. But All Saints spirit can do crazy things; and with that spirit evident all around, perhaps the Cougars would have a chance.

The Cougars started the night on defense, and would hold their own against the Hawk's impressive running game. Silenced by the Cougars steeled defenders, the Red Hawks were forced to punt the ball away on downs. Unfortunately it seemed as though the Cass City defenders were expecting Coach Bisel's infamous six drive, because the Cougars offense was also shut down around mid-field. With the ball now back in Red Hawk hands, the Cougar defense once again went to work around mid-field; however the Hawks were ready this time.

Proving why they were ranked 7th, the Red Hawks blasted through the Cougar defensive line and scored their first touchdown of the night. The Cougars would go to work and spend the rest of the first quarter slowly moving the ball towards the Cass City goal line. With barely a minute left on the clock, however, the Red Hawks regained possession of the football. But the Cougar Defense wasn't about to let the Hawks get anywhere with the ball.

After a penalty on the Hawks moved the ball back ten yards, and ejected Cass City's #25 Luke Newton from the game, the Red Hawks would face a third and eighteen dilemma. This is where the clock expired on the first quarter, leaving the score 7-0 Cass City.

ASC's Mario Walker makes a great tackle to bring down Hawks Luke Newton just moments before Newton was ejected from the game.

The stage was set for the Cougars during the second quarter, they knew they had to step up their game. And step it up they would when Aaron Janer broke through the clash at mid-field and would manage not only to get a first down, but extra yardage for the Cougars. With life brought back into their drive, the Cougars plowed through the Red Hawk's dazed defenders for their first touchdown punched in by Kevin Bisel. Although they missed their extra point attempt, the Cougars had scored their way back into the game.

When Red Hawk's fearsome offense hit the field the Cougar defense put up a good fight, but the Hawk's combatants were just too much for them. The Red Hawks would score their second TD only about forty seconds after the Cougars scored. With half time about nine minutes away, the Cougar knew that if they wanted to have the lead at the half, they'd need to work together as a team.

The Cougar offense went back to work and quickly left the stunned Red Hawk defenders scrambling to keep up. The Cougars forced their way, ten yards at a time, down the field to within scoring distance; and score they would.

With about four minutes left on the clock, the Cougars scored their second TD of the night to make the score a tight 14-12 game. But the Cougars weren't finished yet. After shutting down the Red Hawks offense, the Cougars would once again punch their way through the Hawk's dumbfounded defense and score another touch down to give All Saints the lead.

After completing a two-point-conversion, the Cougars held the lead 20-14. But with forty seconds left on the clock, the Cougars would have to hold off the desperate Hawks from tying it up. As the Hawks made their last attempt to score, with ten seconds left, Josh Sutton crushed their hopes along with the other Cougar defenders by holding their ground.

During the half time, Canton Brissette and Chelsie Niemiec were crowned Homecoming King and Queen 2008. Along with the coronation, the Seniors were awarded the spirit jug after beating out the other three classes, and leaving All Saints with their legacy for amazing skits.

After half time was over it was back to business, and as #35 Brian Mindykowski said, "It's still anyone's game". However, that wasn't what #24 Aaron Janer was thinking as he left the Cass City defenders in his wake and scored an amazing touchdown on the first play of the Cougars drive.

To add to their strong lead, the Cougars connected on a two-point-conversion to make the score 28-14. With the momentum shifted clearly in the favor of All Saints, the ecstatic Cougars went to work on protecting their lead from the frantic Red Hawks. As Defensemen Bryce Wilcox later said "Our defense really stepped up in the second half". Proving him to be correct, the Cougar defense held, and even pushed back, the crumbling Hawks. No one would score in the last few minutes of the third quarter, but it was clear to the Red Hawks that they were staring at their very first loss of the season.

Cass City #7 Austin Babich better watch out as 3 Cougar Defensemen key on him.

The fourth quarter was owned by the Cougars. The Cougar defenders were showing no mercy to their ailing foe, and similarly the Cougar offense was busy running down the clock on Cass City's undefeated season. The Red Hawks managed to keep the Cougars from scoring another touchdown but they weren't able to stop the Cougars from tacking three points from a field goal onto their lead.

Time would expire on the Red Hawks, and the Cougars would claim their Homecoming victory 31-14.

As the fans rushed onto the field to celebrate with their victorious team, Cougar Pride blasted into the stratosphere. The team picture shows it all as the Cougars shout "We're number one!".

VICTORY!

  • Coach Bisel said that his team "Really stepped it up, and played well".
  • Aaron Janer said that "It was teamwork that won this game."
  • Ben Gill stated that "It was a team effort".
  • A speechless Kevin Bisel summed it all up saying, "This was just incredible"!

The 4-2 Cougars won't return home again this season, but will hit the road for three away games which will close out their season.
