Central entered the night determined to break into the win column. That determination was visible throughout the game as they would not be denied. It was that determination that helped overcome both their own mistakes and the Midland Dow Chargers football team.

Central's first play from scrimmage saw 32 Marques Rangel take it off right tackle and sprint 65 yards down the sidelines before being knocked out at the three. But a holding penalty behind the play brought the ball back for a 10 yard gain. The Wolves could only move the ball to midfield before having to punt it away.

After the punt, Dow took possession on their own 19. The Chargers used a spread offense taking advantage of quarterback #2 Kyle Partlo's athletic ability. Through a combination of his running and passing, the Chargers moved the ball down to the Central 43 before punting the ball away.

Central took over on their own 10 and were unable to move the ball resulting in good field position for Dow at the Wolves 45 after the punt. Again, the Chargers couldn't move the ball as the Wolves defensive speed and determination plugged would-be holes stopping any kind of Charger running game.

Following yet another Charger punt, Central started on their own 14. Quick short out passes by QB #8 Michael Schepper followed by off tackle runs got things rolling for the Wolves as they moved the ball out to midfield to end the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the first big break of the game. Schepper's pass went off the finger tips of his receiver and was intercepted by #12 Eric Schwenk who returned it to Central's 10. but a personal foul by the Chargers on the return brought the ball back into Dow's territory for the Chargers. The interception was the lift they needed. Partlo hit #8 Brendon Kroll for a 28 yard gain and the Charger offense was rolling. Soon Partlo hit tight end #80 Bradley Ostergren down the left sideline and he carried it in for a 21 yard play and a touchdown. The extra point try was wide following a penalty and the Chargers were ahead 6-0.

Dow's score following their own mistake made Central that much more determined. Taking the ball on their 26, Central marched back down field. Quick slant patterns to #4 Deon Martin and nice runs had Central's offense clicking. Then #3 Jordan Murphy took it off left tackle made a nice move to the outside and scampered 14 yards to put the Wolves on the board. With the extra point, Central was on top 7-6.

The second quarter excitement didn't end there. Central's defense continued to shut the Chargers down and forced a game changing punt. Central Sophomore #17 Stuart Starkweather blocked the punt which was scooped up by #32 Marques Rangel for another Wolves touchdown and a 14-6 lead at half time.

Central carried the momentum over into the second half. First they stopped Dow on a three and out. After the punt, the Wolves drove from their 24 down the field in determined fashion. Schepper capped off the scoring drive with a 24 yard strike to Deon Martin in the left end zone. With the extra point, the Wolves had extended their lead to 21-6.

Central forced the Chargers to go three and out again and after taking possession on their own 33, were on their way to another score. Schepper hit Murphy for a big gain and soon the Wolves were knocking on the door once again at the Dow 25. A fumble stopped this drive keeping Dow in the game. The Chargers were not able to do anything with the ball as they were now looking to pass but the speedy Wolves secondary kept receivers under wraps. After exchanging punts Central found themselves with good field position on their own 45 and looking for more. They drove to Dow's 37 before a tipped pass was intercepted by #21 Philip Bunge and Dow had found life at their 48.

Charger's Partlo got things moving with his legs as they started moving the ball down the field. Central then helped the drive along with a couple personal foul penalties and a few play later, Partlo was scampering around left end for a three yard touchdown. With a two point conversion pass complete, Central found themselves back in a ball game at 21-14 with 3:03 left to play.

Things get even scarier as the Charger onside kick pin-balled around for what seemed like an eternity to Bay City Central fans, before going out of bounds.

Central ran out the clock preserving a much earned victory. Next week Central travels to Traverse City.
