Homecoming is a time to welcome back past classmates. For Garber, it was also a night to welcome home a fallen teammate from the hospital. The combination was a lethal one for Caro to handle as Garber rolled over the Tigers 48-27.

Garber entered the game missing a key member of the defense in (12) Lee Madziar. Madziar has a reputation for making key sacks at important times in a Garber football game. Following last weeks game at Millington, Madziar separated his shoulder and it was further discovered that he had a lacerated kidney as well.

To honor their teammate, the team wore his number in place of a "G" on their helmet. Additionally, the band and fans formed a spirit tunnel before the game that extended from the team's entrance at the north end of the field to the south end where he waited with his mother.

"The kids really stepped up and devoted their efforts to him," exclaimed a jubilant Coach Schwartz after the game. "They know how important he is to their football team whether he can play or not. It was great to see them respond and have a great night with it."

And have a great night they did.

Garber took the opening kick off and marched 58 yards behind the running of Andrew Aho for the Dukes first score. The extra point was good making it 7-0. Garber then stopped Caro's initial drive before it got started forcing a punt on Caro's 38. But the excitement of the night may have been a bit much as they fumbled the return giving Caro the ball back on Garber's 40. The Duke defense stepped up again driving Caro back 5 yards and forcing another punt.

Garber took over on their 18 and immediately handed the ball back to the Tigers on a fumble putting Caro in great position with the ball on the Duke 16. The Tigers wasted little time as Caleb Sundblad hit Brant Miller for a 14 yard touchdown and added the extra point, making it 7-7.

But this was the night for inspired play by the Dukes. After two penalties moved the ball back to the Garber 25, Jake Hebert hit tight end Mike Schroeder for a 24 yard gain and a Duke first down. Three Andrew Aho runs later and a pass to Todd Walraven had Garber on the Tiger 12. From there, Aho finished off the 6-play drive by running in for the score from 12 yards out. With the kick, the Dukes were on their way 14-7.

Caro responded with a nice drive of their own taking the ball from their 35 to the Garber 10. But the drive stalled when a third down pass was nearly intercepted and a fourth down incomplete gave Garber the ball on their own 10. Aho then ran the ball to the 22 and Hebert added a scamper to the 34 yard line of Garber and they were on their way. A few first downs later and Jake Hebert ran it in from 23 yards out to put Garber up 20-7 with a lot of time left in the second quarter.

It was then that the Garber defense decided to start the Homecoming fireworks show early. After forcing Caro to go three and out, Shane O'Mara blocked the Tiger punt and 56 Kyle Asel ran it in for an apparent score. However, a flag put the ball back on the Tiger 20 but still a first down for the Dukes. Hebert went back to the air and hit Jimmy Cornejo on the one and Andrew Aho finished it off from there making it 26-7 after a failed two point conversion.

The Caro offense floundered again on their next possession and Garber was looking to add one more score before half time. Moving the ball again, Garber went for the score but the pass was intercepted at the goal line by Brant Miller and Garber had to settle for a 26-7 Half time lead.

Following and extended half time and a pep talk, Caro came out looking to get back into the game. The Tigers engineered a nice drive from their 22 yard line down the field with Kyle Diaz pushing it across for a Tiger score making it 26-13.

But this was to be the Dukes night. Travis Britko took the following kick off and ran it back 37 yards to the Caro 43. Britko soon after took a Hebert pass to the 5 yard line. From there, newly-crowned Homecoming King, Andrew Aho punched it in. Hebert then ran in a 2 point conversion and Garber was back ahead 34-13.

Garber immediately shut the Caro offense down and, after a punt, were looking for more. A nice run by David Laskowski helped set up Dominic Trogan's 20 yard run for another Duke touchdown making it 41-13. In Garber's next possession, Trogan served notice that there is another fine Garber running back in the wings as he broke a 55 yard run for his second touchdown making it 48-13 half way through the fourth quarter. Caro came back with two more touchdowns to finish off the evening with a final score of Garber 48, Caro 26.

"The defense stepped up and made big plays when they had to," emphasized Coach Schwartz. "Caro did a nice job moving the ball and we have to get to work and correct that with Frankenmuth coming in next week."

For the night, Andrew Aho finished with 202 yards on 25 carries with Dominic Trogan adding 87 yards on 4 carries. Hebert was 5 for 8 for 86 yards while on the defensive side of the ball, Captain Shane O'Mara had 11 tackles and a blocked punt. Next week, Garber hosts Frankenmuth in an always tough TVC battle.
