Homecoming is many things to many people. But one thing it has become, is a sure sign of autumn. Every autumn, schools across the nation hold their Homecoming football game. This is an invitation for graduates to come back and relive their youth while watching their high school team play. Stadiums are packed with friends getting reacquainted, elaborate half time shows and of course, the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen. It has become an event.

For students, Homecoming starts weeks in advance. There is the planning and assembling of floats for the parade. There are the gowns to be bought and of course, there is the powder puff football game to practice for.

Homecoming is celebrated by students all week. Schools host silly days like dress up like your favorite super hero, glamour day, cowboy day and spirit day. But what catches the most attention is the weekday powder puff football game and bonfire. Stands fill with students and parents alike as the Junior girls take on the Senior girls in touch football.

It is quite a spectacle as girls play football, dressed in game jerseys while members of the football team coach (?) and teacher?s referee. A huge bonfire afterwards monitored by the local fire department caps off a fun filled evening. There is nothing like a twenty foot high fire on a cool crisp evening to get one exited for the coming football game.

Friday brings excitement for all. People of the local neighborhood line the streets to see friends and neighbors ride floats and don costumes for the years theme. The high school band marches to school fight songs and other famous tunes. The parade seems to invite everyone to follow them to the gridiron field for the nights event: the game. And the game has become more of an event. Schools have sky divers bring in the game ball, special features of the year are highlighted and what is a homecoming game without fireworks.

And Yes, there is the Saturday dance filled with elaborate gowns, special pictures to be taken and fancy meals. What is funny is that you just don't seem to see any graduates there.

Homecoming: a special event every year to be enjoyed.
