On Tuesday night, Frankenmuth and Essexville Garber met in a a TVC volleyball match.

While this pitted two talented teams with the promise of great volleyball, the game was also the featured exhibit of a much larger event: Volley For A Cure.

This is the second year the Frankenmuth High School volleyball team has hosted such an event to raise money for Breast Cancer research. Judging by the sea of pink shirts that swept across the gymnasium, it was every bit a success.

"We could always have few more people here," noted an obvious happy Coach Sharon Bade. "But I'm really pleased how many fans we had come out from Frankenmuth."

Many of the spectators arrived early to take part in the Breast Cancer fundraising event. Pink t-shirts were on sale for $5 with the proceeds going to support breast cancer research. First Choice Hair Designs owner, Ann Meyer of Frankenmuth, along with hairstylists Jill Russell and Ruth Padgett gave haircuts and styles for $5.00. All proceeds went to the fundraiser.

With three chairs going, it was a great vantage point from the balcony to watch very good volleyball. Their hands had to be sore as the chairs were constantly full during the entire evening. Both teams and other organizations donated prizes for a silent auction that sported such items as two tickets to a Red Wings game- section 120, autographed pictures of each team, autographed volleyballs including pink ones, mums and other various prizes including a 50/50 drawing.

While the prizes and haircuts made it a festive evening, what really stood out was the stadium dressed in pink. It was incredible to see a whole section, solid with students, supporting a cause while cheering energetically for their team. A sight to see: students (predominately boys wearing pink) arm in arm, rocking back in forth while Garber, also stylishly donned in pink, serving to an awaiting group in their own pink tops.

The inspiration of the night truly spilled over into the game. Both teams seemingly battled for their respective lives. It was a fitting effort for a fitting cause. In the end, Frankenmuth took the upper hand with their net play as they were more effective in both their kills and blocks.

The Eagles pulled out the first game 25-20. They carried that momentum into the second game with a dominating 25-17 win. Garber showed some toughness as they fought back to lead part-way through game three. Then, with the over 1,000 spectators cheering, the home court crowd seemed to give the Eagles a boost as they rallied and pulled out the third game 25-23.

With the win, Frankenmuth remained undefeated in the Tri-Valley East Conference while running their overall record to 24-9-1. While Frankenmuth came away with a league victory, it clearly was a night that Breast Cancer Research was the winner.

Thank you for covering the event! Nice article and great pictures. Your last sentence sums up the entire night. Hoping the exposure prompts all schools to host or participate in this event for years to come.
