Christkindlmarkt A Traditional European-style Christmas market held Thanksgiving Weekend

The Frankenmuth Farmers Market proudly presents its 4th annual Christkindlmarkt, a traditional European-style Christmas market held Thanksgiving Weekend at the same location as the Market, off Main Street just south of Cass Street in Downtown Frankenmuth.

One of a precious few such markets in the state and, in fact, the entire nation, the Christkindlmarkt will welcome thousands of guests.

  • 10am-8pm Friday, November 28, 2008
  • 10am-7pm Saturday, November 29, 2008
  • 10am-5pm Sunday, November 30, 2008

  • Admission is free.

Heralding the holidays along with Frankenmuth's many merry Christmas festivities on Thanksgiving Weekend, the Christkindlmarkt will be bigger and better than ever with more artisans and attractions under an expanded tent. "Our Christmas wish come true!" according to Market Mistress Laurajeanne Kehn, who started the Market and Christkindlmarkt to "supply fresh local products, education, continued rural heritage, community, growth, and enrichment." The regular Market closes from its busiest year to date on October 18.

In the tradition of European open-air markets, the tented Christkindlmarkt will offer food, festivities, fellowship, fine crafts, gifts, art, and decorations to purchase. Guests can warm up with soup simmered up by 4-H, and local chestnuts will be roasting on an open fire by Hickory Hill Chestnut Farm. Holiday foods, spiced cider, and mulled non-alcoholic wine will warm guests' spirits along with live music by the Birch Run String Band and Frankenmuth Gemütlichkeit Club. Hoffman Farms will sell fresh, fragrant holiday garland, wreaths and greens woven to order before guests' eyes.

Frankenmuth's Kapow Soap in a variety of scents and colors makes perfect stocking-stuffers and party favors. Butter Crust Bakery's delicious breads, desserts and candies make great housewarming gifts. Continuing Jon Kern's wildly popular honey operation, Victoria Farms will offer honey, raw honey, honeycomb, flavored honeys, and more.

KaChomp dog treats ensure no creature in the house will be left out this Christmas. Other locally produced baked goods, artisanal gifts, winter foodstuffs, Frankenmuth fudge, décor and much more include: Jacque Beyer's trims, Jennifer Lund's beaded glasswork jewelry, Farmbrook Designs' garden art and hypertufa, Great Lakes Emu Products, Peggy Jenson's German laceworks, Debbie Zona's dried flower arrangements, Glassy Gal glass designs, Peggy and Leo Bates' woodcarvings, Tom Reynolds' stained glass, Norwegian ornaments, Schwarzkopf and Keilhofer's lebkuchen and baked goods from Nuremberg, and retro Christmas designs. True to the Market's mission, products will be locally based to preserve heritage and tradition, with additional focus on Michigan and German products.

In conjunction with the Frankenmuth Farmers Market Christkindlmarkt, the Frankenmuth Jaycees are hosting a Warming Tent Open House at Fischer Hall, directly across Main Street from the Christkindlmarkt, 1-10pm Friday and Saturday. Admission is also free, with traditional German glühwein, beer, and hot chocolate for sale, live entertainment, and a book drive to benefit the Child Abuse and Neglect Council.

The Frankenmuth Farmers Market is a proud charter member of the Michigan Farmers Market Association. Parking can be found behind the Market in the parking lot shared with Zehnder's Restaurant or across the street behind the Chamber Platz. Visitors are invited to experience the Lighting Ceremony in Frankenmuth's River Place at 6:30pm after visiting the Christkindlmarkt on Friday evening, November 28. Interested individuals may receive the Market's weekly email newsletter by emailing dbronner@chartermi.net. To learn more, visit www.frankenmuthfarmersmarket.org.
