The Club held its annual International Night Fund Raiser last Thursday. The event, now in its 16th year, featured a silent and live auction, musical entertainment, and a fantastic dinner prepared by the Chef of the DoubleTree Conference Center.

Titled "Circle of Friends", the dinner featured dishes from around the world. In previous years a single country or region has been featured. This year's menu had dishes from India, China, Greece and Italy. Deserts was an array of international sweets.

International Night is both the club's largest single fund raiser and the most popular. The large number of guests, the generous sponsors, and the wide range of auction items raise well over $30,000 each year. This year's auctions featured items from peacock feathers to a $10,000 mink coat. The Pinconning Standish Rotary Club participated in this year's event by providing a number of auction items.

Other fund raisers enable the club to contribute over $50,000 a year to it's major projects. The club raises even more money for International Projects and Rotary's signature "Polio Plus" program. After a number of years efforts it is hoped that Polio will be eradicated world wide in just a few more years.

Last Weeks Meeting - October 14, 2007

The club welcomed Rotary Exchange Student Luis Flavio Sales from Uberaba, Brazil. The 17 year old is in Bay City for a year. On Tuesday he presented a slide show about his home country. As he said, "Brazil is known for soccer and beautiful women. I'll show you some things you might not know."

Luis' home city Uberaba is in the western part of the state of Minas Gerais. With a population of almost 300,000 it is a large modern city. Uberaba is an agricultural center, producing cattle, soy, corn and sugarcane. Ethanol production is becoming an important industry. The city also has a strong manufacturing and industrial base with over 20 chemical companies. The city is home to five Rotary Clubs.
