Is it necessary to have your diving equipment serviced annually?

YES!

And in case you didn't get that? YES!!!

We get this question almost daily, and it's a very important one. But it should be. If you're a diver, your life depends on it. This statement is in no way meant to scare you away from diving. It's simply a matter of common sense. Diving is a safe sport when done properly with the right equipment. But let's face it, diving is a very equipment intensive sport and the equipment you use consists partly of life support equipment.

There really is no one piece of a divers gear that is any more important than the next piece, because in order to perform a comfortable, successful dive you need a complete set of gear that you are familiar with and that has been maintained properly. However, there are certain pieces of gear that deserve your undivided attention yearly, and in some cases more often. Specifically, your regulators, octos, buoyancy compensators, backup air sources and tanks.

Have your gear checked regularly. And by regularly, we mean at least once a year, and more often if you use it consistently throughout the diving season. Gear that has been packed away for a year or two, and comes out only for vacation should be checked before your trip too.

Now, there are a few divers out there that think such statements are merely plugs for the local dive shops. But that's really not the case. Fact is, most dive shops don't make money on gear service due to the cost of training for technicians, specialty tools needed for the job and the time involved. Consider for example, a typical regulator and octo service. Done properly this service will take an authorized dealer about two hours to perform and will cost you on average only $65-$85, which includes the parts and labor. That's really not bad when you consider the possible consequences of not servicing your gear, such as life threatening illness or even death to you or your dive buddy due to equipment failure.

There are important components within your equipment that deteriorate over time due to use and even lack of use. Most reputable dive shops will do gear checks free of charge. Meaning, they'll put your equipment to the test and let you know if it passes, at no cost to you. So it's well worth the trip!

Another thing to keep in mind is that servicing your gear annually will probably put you at the lower end of the price range for service anyway. Consistently having your equipment serviced is not only recommended and encouraged, but is sometimes even rewarded by dive shops with discounts, and by manufacturers with extended warranties and/or free replacement parts. Reason being, profit is not the motive for reminding you to have your equipment serviced. Diving safety is! We want you and the divers around you to be safe in the water and be diving for years to come with equipment that ready for use every time you head out for an adventure under water.

For more information on dive gear service contact your local dive shop, equipment manufacturer or come see us at Dive & Glide in Downtown Bay City. We perform gear checks for free, and if we find your gear needs attention, we'll knock 25% off gear services you currently need.

Dive safe! And remember - it's always more fun with a buddy!
