October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Charter Media honors it in a classy manner! Charter Media hosted their third annual "An Evening of Hope" event at Horizon's Conference Center in Saginaw last Thursday. This event is designed to help eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by raising money for research, training, screening and development projects in our community and communities around the world!

An estimated 178,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected in women in 2007 and growing. An estimated 40,460 women will die from breast cancer this year. Until more is known about preventing breast cancer, early detection offers the best defenses against breast cancer. All women are at risk for breast cancer. Women 50 and older are at a greater risk.

The evening showcased the wonderful advancements in medical care and highlighted stories of triumph and success from breast and other cancer survivors.

Over 100 local businesses donated items for a silent auction to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The event continues to grow and donations given are more prosperous every year for the cause. Charter Media is dedicated to giving back to the communities it serves with many fine events throughout the year such as this one.

Ashley LaForest, Miss Bay County 2009 was a guest speaker at the event. When Ashley was just 15 months old, she was diagnosed with Endodermal Sinus Tumor. The toxicity of the chemotherapy treatments left her with scar tissue in her lungs as well as hearing impairment.

As Miss Bay County, Ashley is heavily involved in the pageant system. Her platform is C.U.R.E.D (Cancer Undergoing Research and Early Detection) where she has personally taken great strides to educate others about this horrible disease.

Ashley's goal is to show others that she is not going to let her disability stop her from pursuing her dreams to reach out to others about cancer prevention. Ashley is a role model for other survivors, passionate about sharing her message and pursuing life with enthusiasm and courage.

There were numerous sponsors for this phenomenal event! Bay Regional Medical Center was the Corporate Sponsor and proceeds went to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

Thank you for the awesome coverage of an event for such a great cause. It's nice to see good news like this getting out to the public, more then what can be said for what we see from our other news media's like the Bay City Time, Saginaw News, TV5, 12 and 25. No Doom and Gloom, no need for the others to cover it. Thanks again MyBayCity.
