As the Cougars walked out onto their home turf, only one thing was on their minds, and QB Josh Sutton summed it up saying "We came out with the mindset to stuff the football down their throats".

It was clear that the Cougars were well prepared for this game when, after deferring the football, the Cougar's rock-solid defense stopped the Hillman Tigers in their tracks. Only seconds after regaining possession of the ball Sutton connected with #85 BJ Weaver on a 35 yard pass that put the Cougars within easy scoring range. Kevin Bisel #11 would punch in the first, of many Cougar touchdowns for the night. After the extra point was tacked on by Brett Campbell, the Cougars took an early lead 7-0.

After the Cougar defense man-handled the Hillman Tigers again, Aaron Janer #24 was handed the football and didn't give it back till he had rushed in a 50 yard touchdown to add to the Cougars early lead. Another extra point put the Cougars ahead 14-0 at the end of the first.

The score-fest didn't end yet as the Cougars were only getting warmed up. After some great tackling from the Cougar's seemingly impenetrable defense, the Cougars were back on offense. The Cougars would easily work the ball down the field to a point where Aaron Janer, once again, scored another touchdown for the Cougars. The kick was no good but the score put the Cougars up 20-0 with ten more minutes to go in the first half.

Outstanding defense folowed by some spectacular blocking from the Cougar offense paved the way for another Cougar touchdown, scored by Aaron Janer. After the Cougar defenders subdued the Tigers' outgunned offense, the Cougars would move the ball down the field and with 4 seconds left on the clock Brett Campbell would connect on a field goal. As the clock ran out on the first half the Cougars were ahead of Hillman 29-0.

After the halftime break the Cougars went right back to work . . . putting the finishing touch on the Tigers. Coach Bisel would say that his defenders "Executed real well" when on the field. It was the Cougars stubborn and powerful defense that, time after time, held the Tigers in check.

ASC defensive linemen Seniors Mario Walker #43 and Jimmy Nicoson #50 held the Tigers to only 89 yards rushing.

When the Cougars weren't on defense, they were busy scoring more touchdowns. BJ Weaver would break through the Tiger defenders and score a 23 yard touchdown.

Later, with only 6 seconds left on the clock, Janer would score his last touchdown for the night; and with another good kick from "Brettman" Campbell the score read 42-0 at the end of the third.

With the Cougars comfortably ahead, Coach Bisel sent in his second string of Cougars to see that they got some playoff playing time, as well as giving the 'big guns' some well-earned rest. The Cougars would hold off the Tigers' attempts to at least score once, and would get some good practice in for next weeks game. Justin Gielda #13 , a regular at half-back, would have the honor of scoring the last Cougar touchdown of the night, and with the extra point the scoring ended at 49-0 Cougars.

Jimmy Goss #64 would say the win was a "Team effort", while the tone of the game was set by BJ Weaver; who would say "Josh (Sutton) threw a pass, I caught it -end of story". The victorious Cougars will stay at home for round two of their playoff journey next Friday as they face off against Mio for the Division 8 District Championship. The Cougars (7-3) host Mio (7-3) for the district championship at 7 p.m. next Friday.

Thanks for your excellent article, Kevin. It is good to see that the last remaining Catholic High School in old Bay City is fielding such a fine football team. Once upon a time (back when coach Bisel was playing high school football) we had St. Stanislaus, St. James, St. Joseph, Visatacion, St. Mary and Essexville St. John. There were some fierce rivalries between the schools. Those were wonderful times. We had no play-offs and I'm glad to see today's kids have a chance to win state titles and so forth (and in all sports, not just football). Keep up the good work. It is a joy to see All Saints doing so well.
