Over 500,000 Page Views Recorded Every Month
The Sky's The Limit For Local Internet News Magazine

MyBayCity.com continues to grow in popularity with readers in the mid-Michigan area.

The innovative news site has shown an increase of 260 percent in page views over the past two years, on track to reach an annual grand total of 29.7 million by the end of this year.

Meanwhile, the communications landscape continues to evolve, with the prestigious Christian Science Monitor dropping its print edition recently and going strictly with the Internet.

"The exponential growth and acceptance of MyBayCity has validated my personal philosophy that there is just too much bad news heaped on the general public on a day-to-day basis," MyBayCity Publisher O.J. Cunningham said.

"Morning, noon and night . . . it's nothing but an incessant harangue of death and destruction. All doom and gloom," Cunningham went on. "I like to think of MyBayCity (MyTriCityNews) as an oasis of 'good news' in an otherwise desolate landscape," Cunningham said.

Other Publications in the Cunningham Newspaper Syndicate are:
  • Frankenmuth, Michigan -- www.MyFrankenmuth.com
  • Freeland, Michigan -- www.MyFreelandMi.com
  • Tri-Cities Michigan -- www.MyTriCityNews.com
  • Pinconning, Michigan -- www.MyPinconningNews.com

Cunningham continued: "At the same time that positive news predominates, we reserve the right to comment and analyze in depth issues that require more insight to aid readers in their decision-making process as members of an informed citizenry."

Cunningham went on to say that the commitment of the staff at parent company OJ Advertising, Inc has been instrumental in the success of the online newspaper project.

"This is a team effort," Cunningham said. Cunningham went on to point out that Julie Munger-McCallum (Entertainment), Karen Polega (Karen's Korner), Steve Kent (Special Event Photography) and the hard news coverage of Dave Rogers has been totally responsible for the continued success of the publication(s).

Cunningham also said that young, emerging sports writers like John Keuvelaar and Kevin Kula have worked hard at football and basketball games to provide full game coverage and photographs that capture the emotion of the local high school sports experience.

"This is a team effort," Cunningham said.

MyBayCity.com recorded 384,346 page views and 28,698 sessions in September, 2008.

Page views are up from 73,620 and sessions are up from 18,080 in July 2006 when statistics were first compiled on the news site.

A 'Session' (Visitor) is defined as a series of clicks on your site by an individual visitor during a specific period of time. A Session is initiated when the visitor arrives at your site, and it ends when the browser is closed or there is a period of inactivity.

A 'Pageview' is defined as a request from a visitor's browser for a displayable web page, generally an HTML file. Generally this implies "clicks" on a website. Click to read an article . . . Click to look at Picture of the Day, etc.

The first experimental traffic on MyBayCity.com was Nov. 14, 1999 when a story entitled "An Amazing Catch!" by Chris Cunningham was posted.

Regular publication began in March 2002 and since the beginning a grand total of 3,018 articles have been published, most with photographs and many with photo stories. These articles are indexed by Google and available on-line. (Found by using the SEARCH function on the front page of MyBayCity)

Nationally, newspaper company websites are seeing record traffic as people turn to sites such as NYTimes.com and WSJ.com for financial news during the crisis. Nielsen Online recently reported newspaper sites got a record 68.3 million unique visitors in the third quarter, an increase of 15.8 percent over the third quarter of '07, with average monthly page views going up 25.2 percent over the same quarter a year ago to 10.5 billion.

Nielsen also learned that time spent by readers on top newspaper sites was actually down in September 2008 compared to September 2007. "Newspaper websites drew in more people with news of the presidential campaign and the financial meltdown," wrote E&P's Jennifer Saba. "Readers may be dashing in and out of the sites for specific stories rather than lingering."
