Semi-final Loss Ends Lady Cougars' Outstanding Post-season Run

Lady Cougars prepare for their first game in the State Finals

For a small school located in Bay City, the All Saints Cougars have clearly established their school as an undisputed sports powerhouse.
During the 2008-09 high school sports season, the Cougars have claimed a boys Football District Title, a boys Tennis League Title, and the Cougar Lady's Volleyball team added a District Title and a State Regional Title to the ever-growing list. Hoping to make All Saints history, the Cougar volleyball team traveled to Battle Creek on Friday, to take on the defending State champions -- the St. Phillip Tigers, in Semi-final action.

The Cougars hit the court running and kept the first game a close match. Solid blocking from #3 Molly Neymeiyer and #4 Ashley Bowker helped the Cougars keep things even, while #6 Taylor Timm helped the Cougars maintain their edge. The Cougars kept things even on the scoreboard until the very end of the first game when a string of points put the Tigers ahead 24-23. Despite the Cougars best efforts, the Tigers' finesse and skill carried the first game.

The Tigers dominated the second game. Although the Cougars played the best defense they could, it wasn't enough to stop the Tigers' high-scoring offense. After gaining an early 6 point lead, the Tigers held their lead and continued to add to their score till it was 15-8. At that point, Cougar Coach Dianna Sutton called a timeout to rally her team. However, the Cougars were unable to regain the intensity they showed in the first game and succumbed to the Tigers punishing offense 25-11.

Down 2 games, the Lady Cougars needed to win three straight games if they wanted to advance to the state finals. The Tigers drew first blood, but the Cougars struck right back to pull even at 4-4. That small flicker of hope didn't last long because the Tigers proved why they are the two-time defending state champions. The Tigers showed no mercy as they systematically shut down the Cougars. Despite the one-sided 24-8 score on the board, the Cougars played their best all the way to the end of the match.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, the Cougar girls played arguably the best season in All Saints volleyball history and can be justifiably proud of their accomplishment.
For seniors Brittany Case, Molly Neymeiyer, Ashley Bowker, Jeanie Heintskill, Taylor Timm, and Amanda Donajkowski, their last season ended too soon. Still, they will walk away with two titles, and enough memories to last a lifetime.
These Cougars are all smiles as they remember they have brought home both District and Regional Titles.
