UAC billboard giving pause to passing motorists is on I-75 at Luna Pier, 10 miles north of Toledo and 20 miles south of Detroit on Interstate 75.

Driving South on I-75, the billboard popped into view:

"SHARIA LAW THREATENS AMERICA."

"What the heck does that mean, Dolores? I asked my wife."

She opined that I should look it up on the Internet when we got home from a Thanksgiving trip to her son's house in Cincinnati.

Knowing little about Islam, except what frightening predictions I learned in a 1980 book "Militant Islam" that I reviewed for the YWCA Booked for Lunch, I figured it must be important.

Upon arriving home Friday night, I soon learned that the United American Committee (UAC) had erected the 48-foot long billboard the previous week.

Sharia Law is a legal system recognized in many Islamic countries such as the former Taliban regime of Afghanistan, and currently Saudi Arabia, and is a legal system which dictates beheadings, stonings, and other punishments for what are listed as crimes under Sharia such as homosexuality and adultery, and according to critics views women as inferior granting them little rights.

Days after the billboard went up, emails from angry Muslim residents began coming in to the offices of UAC. "Muslims are the biggest victims of Sharia Law in the world." said Tom Trento, a UAC spokesperson, continuing: "We hope this message inspires the Muslims of America who came to this country to escape Sharia, to stand up against it."

Wafa Sultan, a Syrian Muslim who escaped from the Middle-East and has become an outspoken critic of Sharia Law, said Islamic charities and organizations in America have pushed for support for Sharia Law in parts of America. Sultan also points out that in Great Britain and France, Sharia Law is being enforced in various ways in certain communities. Most recently Great Britain has officially sanctioned the establishment of Sharia courts for civil matters among Muslims. "Our constitution is not compatible with Sharia" Sultan states, a view shared by many in America.

The United American Committee is a non-profit educational group dedicated to "awakening the nation to the threats of radical Islam and working to educate Americans on the nature of Islamic extremism." Its stated mission is to fight the ideological aspects of the War on Terror to counter elements of radical Islam in America.

UAC is headquartered in Rancho Santa Margarita, California. The Detroit branch, headed by Howell Davis, may be contacted at http://www.detroitunitedamerican.org. Media contact is Tom Trento, 561-767-0982.

I also found the Internet ablaze with wild comments against nations that are allowing the Islamic law concepts to be gradually integrated into Western culture.

Sharia law dictates strict penalties for a variety of offenses, mainly of a sexual nature, and is especially harsh on women victims even though they are blameless.

Within Sharia law, there are a group of "Haram" offenses which carry severe punishments, notes an Ontario, Canada website www.religioustolerance.org. These include pre-marital sexual intercourse, sex by divorced persons, post-marital sex, adultery, false accusation of unlawful intercourse, drinking alcohol, theft, and highway robbery. Haram sexual offenses can carry a sentence of stoning to death or severe flogging.

This code also allows males to keep harems and condones other ancient customs of the Muslim world totally at odds with American culture. Although this law is not supposed to be applicable to non-Muslims, there have been exceptions.

Strong opposition from the UAC in Michigan appears to be the first shot in an ideological war to protect America against the predations of a religious fanaticism that is encircling its tentacles around European countries, especially Great Britain.

It is not misogyny to fear a violent culture that threatens to invade your home. This is real, not the crassly politically motivated "Barack Obama is a Muslim" claims that fell on deaf ears of most Americans too intelligent to buy them.

The kind of "justice" advocated by the Islamic extremists would turn the U.S. Constitution on its head and defeat all that Americans have fought for over the past 232 years since the Declaration of Independence.

The 14th Amendment to the Constitution states that its protections are extended to all persons in the country, not just citizens. This has led to the general acceptance that the U.S. is the most welcoming society in the world and is a source of great pride.

Shariah law dictates death to such unfortunates as rape victims and has a particularly venomous bias against women. Not only is this unAmerican, it is against all the laws of God and man, of whatever religion.

The worst example of this madness came in the recent murder of a 13-year-old who had been gang-raped by a group of men including her cousins. Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow was sentenced to be stoned to death by the all-male court that found her guilty of adultery. For the "crime" of being forcibly raped!

She was taken from the courthouse to a local sports stadium in the Somalian town of Kismayo, buried up to her neck in sand and then stoned in front of a crowd of 1,000 spectators.

It was no mistake that the billboard went up just outside of Detroit, and Dearborn, home to many Muslims. Approximately 30,000 people of Arab ancestry, mostly Lebanese Christians, live in Dearborn, the largest concentration pf Arabs in any city its size, totaling about 100,000.

"Shariah law is a legal system recognized in many Islamic countries such as the former Taliban regime of Afghanistan, and currently Saudi Arabia, and is a legal system which dictates beheadings, stonings, and other punishments for what are listed as crimes under Shariah such as homosexuality and adultery, and according to critics views women as inferior granting them little rights," the organization's website states.

Islamic expert Daniel Pipes warns in in the Jerusalem Post that Shariah is advancing gradually into Western Europe and North America. Pipes cited the recent case of a Scottish judge who sanctioned polygamy that is allowed under Shariah.

"The case involved a Muslim male who drove 64 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone -- usually grounds for an automatic loss of one's driving license. The defendant's lawyer explained his client's need to speed: 'He has one wife in Motherwell and another in Glasgow and sleeps with one one night and stays with the other the next on an alternate basis. Without his driving license he would be unable to do this on a regular basis,'" Pipes reported.

"Sympathetic to the polygamist's plight, the judge permitted him to retain his license," he said.

Pipes wrote that at least six Western jurisdictions now accept harems, including Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Australia and Canada. Canada acknowledges "a marriage that is actually or potentially polygamous, if it was celebrated in a jurisdiction whose system of law recognizes it as valid."

However, in 2005 several top Australian officials told Muslims who wanted to adhere to Sharia law to leave the country. Their action made world news but was accepted by Muslim clerics in Australia.

The Heritage Foundation warns the U.S. needs to maintain active opposition to plans for "religious anti-defamation" laws both within its borders and internationally or face consequences.

Steven Groves of Heritage says the U.S. should refuse to recognize "a new legal cause of action that bans insults or criticism of religion," asserting it would provide no benefit whatsoever.

States already have laws to condemn religious discrimination and prosecute acts of incitement to violence, he argues. The federal government "should tread extremely lightly where disputes over religious doctrine are concerned. The U.S. does not need a national speech code that would restrict the First Amendment rights of Americans, no matter how offensive that speech may be to any particular religious denomination."

Groves cited the 2005 attempt by Rep. John Conyers Jr., D-Mich., who wanted to require that the Islamic holy book, the Quran, be treated with "dignity and respect."

"Any attempt to establish a criminal or civil 'defamation of religions' law in the United States -- must be strongly opposed," Groves said. "Attempts to introduce such legislation may be incremental -- notably, in May 2005, when a group of U.S. congressmen sponsored a resolution," he said. "Such piecemeal legislation must be closely guarded against."
