When Joe Herek took over as the Pinconning girls basketball coach, he
inherited a team that only won three games last year. While one game doesn't
make a season, the Lady Spartans looked impressive as they posted a 53-38
victory over Bay City All Saints.
Taking advantage of a Cougar squad that was limited to a week of practice
due to the volleyball team's State semi-final run, the Spartans employed a
smothering defense. This lead to quick turnovers and easy baskets as the
Spartans pulled out to a 17-8 lead by the end of the first quarter.

But the Cougar squad has plenty of playoff experience and veteran
leadership. They settled things down in the second quarter and began
chipping away at the lead. Midway through the second quarter, the Cougars
had dwindled the lead to within four points.
Pinconning decided to spread out the Cougar defense. With three minutes on
the clock, the Spartans held the ball at half court taking a come and get me
approach. All Saints stayed back resulting in 50 seconds of watching guard
Jessica Vidalez dribble the ball. Then the Cougars attacked allowing
Pinconning to attack the middle. This settled the ship for Pinconning as
they held on to a 26-20 half time lead.
The third quarter saw both teams exchange baskets until the Spartans reeled
off eight straight points and finished with a 43-30 lead going into the
fourth quarter.
Try as they might, the Cougars couldn't muster a comeback to overcome the 13
point deficit. Pinconning cruised to a 53-38 win giving Joe Herek his first
Pinconning Varsity win.
