It was a hard fought battle all night. All night the Lady Wolves came back from deficits only to fall short of taking the lead. In the end, it boiled down to the simple things and an all-star performance by Flint Central's Tiffina Bennett that spelled doomed for the Wolves.

"We played well. We played hard. The intensity was there. We didn't do the simple things to win basketball games," noted Coach Todd Thunberg. "That is free throws in the second half, we were one for ten, and we missed three lay ups. That is a lot of points to leave out there. We make those lay ups, even go 50 (percent) on the free throw line in the second half, we win the game."

But the difference in the game was more than a few missed shots. It took a dominating performance by Flint Central's returning all-Valley player, Tiffina Bennett, to turn back these Wolves. Ms. Bennett pumped in 27 points, including going eight for eight from the charity stripe to lead all scorers. Just as impressive, she hauled in 17 rebounds to help control the boards.

Even with Tiffina Bennett's performance, Bay City was in the game the whole way. In a fast pace, pressure play quarter, the Wolves found themselves down only by 3, 13-10 at the end of the first quarter. They played even with Flint in the second half and found themselves down 25-20 at the half.

The high intensity play continued in the third quarter. Just when Flint would score a couple baskets and look like they might pull away, back game the Wolves showing great tenacity and determination to pull close to the Phoenix. But with all the effort, the Wolves found themselves down by seven entering the fourth quarter, 39-32.

While Flint had their Tiffina Bennett, Bay City Central and an equally dominating performance by Danette Decorte. The senior forward scored 20 points of her own, including going three for 4 from the free throw line while collecting 14 rebounds. A fourth quarter pressure defense produced steals resulting in back to back Decorte baskets.

This brought the Wolves to within one point 39-38 with four minutes remaining. With any comeback, a lot of energy is expended. Down the stretch, the Wolves went only one for eight from the free throw line. Not only did this result in missed points, but allowed the Phoenix to gain control of the ball and eventually pull away with the victory, 56-48.

"We did a lot of good things out there like being aggressive and not turning the ball over that much against the pressure," noted Coach Thunberg obviously pleased with his team's effort. "I saw a lot of positive things tonight."

Besides Decorte's 20 points, she had solid offensive help from Whitney Henry who added 11 points and Emilee Prime who scored 8. Eunagette Meeks scored 10 for the Phoenix.
