PRESS RELEASE: State Representative Jeff Mayes (D-Bay City), who has led the way in promoting initiatives to make Michigan a powerhouse in the alternative energy sector, today announced that a bipartisan, bicameral package to create good-paying jobs, boost the economy and make Michigan a national leader in alternative fuel production is on its way to the Governor to be signed into law.

"The increased development of alternative fuels will create thousands of jobs for our workers," said Mayes, Chair of the House Agriculture Committee, Vice-Chair of the House Energy and Technology Committee and a lead sponsor of the plan. "Michigan has the talented workforce and resources necessary to make our state a leader in this cutting-edge industry. With renewable energy production, the future is truly here today for Michigan."

The package will expand Michigan's commitment to alternative fuels by:

· Dedicating five new Alternative Energy Renaissance Zones for facilities that use cellulosic materials for fuel production, bringing the total number to 15;

· Requiring the Michigan Department of Agriculture to develop standards for a biodiesel blend designated as B20;

· Expanding the role of the Renewable Fuels Commission;

· Creating a property, sales and use tax exemption for machinery used to harvest biomass.

"We can greatly reduce our dependence on foreign oil by producing clean, renewable fuels right here in Michigan," Mayes said. "Sending this package to the Governor is a huge step toward encouraging investment in alternative fuels, driving down the cost of gas for our residents and boosting our economy. The Great Lakes State is well positioned to become the Great Energy State, and this bipartisan, bicameral package will make that potential a reality."
