Consumers Energy is seeking approval from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) to construct an 800-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Hampton Township. This proposed plant would mean an investment by Consumers Energy of at least $2.4 billion, the largest private investment in the history of Bay County.

This vital project would bring an estimated 1,800 construction jobs, about 80 new permanent operating jobs and would more than double Consumers Energy's property tax payments to local governmental units from the current level of $11 million annually to well over $20 million. In order to help ensure this project becomes a reality, we need your help.

A "Call To Action" form is available on the Chamber's website in which you can sign up to express your support for the new power plant. Simply fill out the form and fax or e-mail it to your Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. You may indicate whether you wish to submit written comments to MDEQ, send a letter to the governor, send an e-mail to MDEQ's web site, testify at a public hearing or write a letter to your local newspaper or State legislator.

Consumers Energy submitted its air permit application to the MDEQ in October, 2007. The agency plans to conduct an air permit public comment period and hold information meetings, open houses and public hearings during the 60 day period. Please join us in supporting the new Consumers Energy clean coal plant by sending in your "Call To Action" form today.
