The last time these two schools met, it was for the Tip-Off Classic Championship. While Garber handedly came away with the win, Pinconning was looking for redemption as well as getting their season back on track. The result was a very spirited contest.

Garber came out looking strong with good ball control and movement. But try as they might, they couldn't find the bottom of the net. This allowed the Spartans to get some confidence and behind Jessica Vidalez hot outside shooting, the built a 10-5 lead late in the first quarter. But one of the strengths of Garber is their bench strength.

Caitlyn Keuvelaar came off the bench and hit her first two shots to pull the Dukes to within one point by the end of the first quarter, 10-9. Meanwhile, Janelle Urban, the senior sixth man, came in and took over running the offense. Attacking the lane, she rang up 12 points and between the two, tallied 18 of the Dukes 26 first half points.

The Spartans had an answer in Jessica Vidalez. The junior point guard was red hot from the outside, hitting long range jumpers and three to help the Spartans build a 32-26 half time lead.

The third quarter saw the Dukes switch from a trapping full court press to a man to man press. The move ignited the Dukes both offensively and defensively. Senior point guard Kelsea Zimmerman spearheaded the Duke offense. Hitting one of her patent running jumpers, she followed it with another jumper then after pulling down a baseline rebound, drove under the basket with a backhand layup.

Defensively, the Dukes man to man press not only produced turnovers, but smothered sharp shooter Vidalez preventing her from getting open shots. The effort put Garber up 46-41 at the end of the fourth quarter.

But this Spartan team is much better than their record would suggest. Senior Lauren Pilot stepped up offensively and Pinconning started chipping away at the lead. With both teams pressing, Pinconning had to take chances which resulted in fouls. But Garber couldn't pull away as their 9-21 shooting from the free throw line kept the game close. The Spartans got to 52-50 when the veteran back court of the Dukes took over. Quick ball movement found open players for short jumpers and they lead spread. Then with 1:27 left, the Dukes went into a stall and took a minute off the clock as they built a 61-55 lead. Tight defense resulted in hurried shots and soon the Lady Dukes walked away with a 63-55 win.

Kelsea Zimmerman led the Dukes with 16 points with Janelle Urban adding 14. Jessica Vidalez led all scorers with 21 points while Lauren Pilot added 14.
