Superintendent Carolyn Wierda -- Moving to SVSU

Supt. Carolyn Wierda of the Bay City Public Schools has announced that the school board will hold a special meeting Jan. 26 to begin a search for a new superintendent.

Mrs. Wierda, who will be guest host on an upcoming Tri-City Buzz television program, last week announced she will move to Saginaw Valley State University's School of Education next year. She will leave her post in Bay City in June.

"It has been an incredible honor to serve the district the past eleven years, the last five as superintendent," she wrote to "key communicators" of the district, thanking all her supporters. "The transition to a position at Saginaw Valley State University is very exciting."

Mrs. Wierda's outstanding achievement during her tenure with the local district was leading the effort for voter approval of a $66.8 million bond issue to renovate many of the schools, including Central and Western high schools.

Under her leadership, the district reduced its $76 million budget by $20 million. All staff took pay freezes and step freezes to help accomplish the budget trimming. Administration and support staff changed health care coverage to achieve more economies and reductions were effected in athletics, administration, transportation, counseling, libraries, nursing and other support functions.

The announcement of a superintendent search may or may not preclude an appointment from inside the district, according to informed observers. Director of finance and accounting Douglas C. Newcombe's name has been mentioned but it is not known if he is a candidate for the superintendent's post. He holds and master's degree in business administration and is a Certified Public Accountant.

The superintendent also wrote to communicators: "Trimester plans for our high schools are in full swing with class registration for 09-10 to begin in March. We're excited about opportunities for our high school students to have time for both intervention as well as electives."

The district is preparing to roll out a technological tool, Edline, at the second semester for the parents of middle and high schools students. This tool will help parents stay informed of student progress using a web-based grading tool. In addition, the district is very pleased to share the new Gifted and Talented website along with the new College Preparation Services website - both accessible by going to www.bcschools.net.

The Bay City Public Schools has been invited to continue the partnership with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago (TECO) to bring another Chinese language teacher to the district. Currently, Jessica Wu teaches Mandarin Chinese at Western High, Western Middle and Auburn Elementary. The second teacher will be instructing at Central High and Handy Middle Schools beginning in the fall of 2009.

The office of College Preparation Services/Bay Commitment Scholarship program, under the direction of Sue Murphy, offers college night opportunities. Western High's was held on January 14; Central High's will be held on Tuesday, January 20; and Wenona Center's will be held on Thursday, January 22. These evenings help students and parents prepare for college thinking and planning.

The deadline for the Bay Commitment Scholarship application is March 2. This is the second year of a new opportunity offered by the Bay Area Community Foundation to Bay City Public School students who are first in their family to attend college. The pilot program offers students a $2000 scholarship to attend Delta or Saginaw Valley State University.

Kindergarten Registration will begin with building meetings for incoming parents in February. The meetings will be held at 6:00 p.m. on the following dates: Auburn on February 16; Hampton on February 26; Kolb on February 25; Linsday on February 17; MacGregor on February 18; Mackensen on February 19; McAlear-Sawden on February 23; and Washington on February 24.

"It's time already to think about these very special young children joining the Bay City Public Schools and we're excited," the superintendent said. ###
