State Representative Jeff Mayes (D-Bay City) has received an award from the Michigan Communication Directors' Association (MCDA) for his work to protect taxpayers from steep hikes in 9-1-1 surcharges.

"It is an honor to receive this award and I'm very grateful to the MCDA for recognizing these efforts to make sure our residents are getting a fair shake," Mayes said. "Emergency services are an integral part of any community and this plan was designed so that residents continue to receive only the highest quality of service."

Mayes' plan, which was signed into law by the governor last year, limits the amount a county board can assess for a 9-1-1 surcharge at 42 cents per phone or other device. Any additional amount, up to $3, is subject to the approval of the voters of the county. This gives counties flexibility in setting the surcharge, while preventing large rate increases without prior approval.

The MCDA is a statewide organization for employees of public safety communication systems
