Thursday night saw the Premier Basketball League defending Champions, Rochester RazorSharks, pay a visit to the Destroyers. Unfortunately that also meant Player of the Week, James Reaves, would be there too. And while the Destroyers were on a 2-1 streak, including that overtime loss to undefeated Battle Creek, it was the RazorSharks with their third period explosion that came away with the win, 119-82.

"This was a very tough loss," said an obviously disappointed coach TJ Newsham. "We had a chance to measure ourselves against one of the top teams in the league."

The measurement was not quite as bad as the final score. Both teams played dead even with spits and spurts by both teams. Just over half way through the first period, Rochester started to control the ball more and pulled out to a 29-23 lead.

This trend continued in the second quarter as Rochester widened their lead with deadly accurate shooting. In the last four minutes, the Destroyer offense came to life and with a mini run of their own. A buzzer beater tip in by Justin Hall had the Destroyers within 7 at the half, 48-41.

The Destroyers seemed to carry this momentum into the third quarter. Following a Odgra Bobo tap in, the Destroyers had narrow the margin to 58-55 with 7 minutes to play in the quarter. That is when things fell apart. Rochester's Keith Friel hit four three pointers as part of the 23-9 run for which the Destroyers on this night didn't have an answer. When the third quarter horn sounded, Rochester held a 81-64 lead.

"In the third quarter, we were down by four, came down and didn't take care of the ball. They took advantage of us," explained Coach TJ Newsham about the end of the quarter run. "That put us in a very bad position. Then we came down tried to force a shot. When you try to force a forty to fifty foot shot and miss it, they will come back down. There were just too many possessions that we came up empty- didn't get a look at the basket."

Uncharacteristically the Destroyers were not able to mount much of a comeback in the fourth quarter. Deflected passes and steals contributed to the RazorSharks staying out front and finishing off with a 119-82 win.

While disappointed with their second half performance, Coach Newsham was not going to dwell too long on it. "We got Augusta," noted Coach Newsham already looking to the next contest. "We have film on Augusta and that helps with our preparation as it did in Chicago (whom they have beaten twice). We have to look at ourselves in the mirror and know we have some short comings right now. We have to adjust." And adjust they must as they will play these same RazorSharks 3 more times in their next 7 games.

The Destroyers begin a grueling five game road trip starting January 31. On that trip, they will take on the Augusta Grooves, then travel to Rochester on February 7, Chicago the 13th, then visit Battle Creek on the 19th and return to Rochester on the 21st. They return home the next night, Sunday the 22nd to take on the Detroit Panthers at 6:00 pm at Western High School.
