Garber Girls Avenges Early Loss To Millington

Molly Braun led the Dukes with 16 points & Kara Brewer added 13

The loss to Millington in the first week of the season has never sat well with the Garber girls. Tuesday night was a chance to right that wrong. But the basketball game took on a whole new meaning in light of a fellow classmate who had tragically passed away over the weekend. It was a chance to honor a classmate in a sport he loved.

The first quarter was a fast pace up and down the court game. Each team struggle to find their shooting touch as rebounds turned into moving the ball quickly down court for a quick shot and yet another rebound. By the end of the race horse quarter, Garber held an 11-10 lead.

The second quarter saw the flow settle down. Controlling the ball was the key as both teams looked to set up and run their offense. Millington turned to their leading scorer point guard Kayla Doshier who had almost single handedly beaten Garber in their first meeting. She continually drove the middle for lay ups, short jumpers or dished off to her teammates scoring 9 of her teams 15 second quarter points. But Garber had their own answer to Doshier. Janelle Urban stepped in at point guard attacking the basket with similar results. Fellow point guards Molly Braun and Kelsea Zimmerman soon joined. Garber scored 17 points for the quarter to hold a 28-25 halftime lead.

The third quarter saw the game remain tight as both teams traded baskets with Garber refusing to relinquish the lead. Tightening off Doshier's ability to drive the lane, Garber was able to increase the lead by one, 46-42.

Molly Braun took over the Garber attack as she penetrated the Cardinal defense for easy two-pointers or kicking out to Kara Brewer for her long range buckets. The Dukes then looked to slow things down and control the ball by working it around the perimeter. This forced Millington to foul for a chance to get the ball back. But the strategy failed as Garber hit 6 of 9 down the stretch. The fouling strategy also cost them Kayla Doshier who fouled out. This resulted in a final score of Garber 62, Millington 51.

Molly Braun led the Dukes with 16 points, with Kara Brewer hitting 13 from the perimeter, while Kelsea Zimmerman added 12 and Janelle Urban 10. . Kayla Doshier led all scorers with 23 for Millington while Alexis Reinert added 12 points and Rachel Lawe tallied 10.
