Friday night was cross-town rivalry night as Bay City Central hosted Bay City Western. A spirited rivalry featured the boys game first with the girls in the night cap. Local DJ Mike Mendoza provided music to fire up any crowd. And of course, there was the Central student section, colorful in their purple and gold and animated as ever. Not to be outdone, the Western faithful were present: not as colorful but every bit as vocal.

Both teams started a little juiced up with shots a little strong and ball just a bit slick. As the period progressed, play settled down to crisp passing of the ball. Western dominated much of the first quarter with tight man-to-man defense and strong inside play limiting Central to no second chances. With that, Western pasted a 9-4 first quarter lead.

Central started the second quarter working screens and slashing guards to the basket to open up shooting lanes. The strategy worked initially pulling Central within nine points, then Corey Arnold responded. After scoring a fast break for two, he hit a three then stole a pass, driving to the basket for two. Undaunted, the wolves kept working their game, drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line.

Central went ten for twelve from the line to offset Western's Corey Arnold's seven second quarter points to narrow the margin at the half 21-18.

Half-time was every bit as entertaining at the game leading it off was the ever talented Bay City Central Dance Team. Choosing a more choreographed routine than acrobatic, they had the student section howling. Then Tie-Bo music caused spontaneous dancing/exercising on the court. And what half-time show would be complete without a proposal - at least to the Sadie Hawkins dance. He said Yes!

Fast pace was the third quarter action. Each team looked to push the ball up the court looking for fast break points. With tight defense on both sides preventing good looks at the baskets, this seemed a good strategy. It worked well for Western as they finished the quarter with a 31-23 lead.

Fourth quarter started with neither team being able to find the shooting touch. Then Corey Arnold knocked the lid off with a three-pointer giving Western a 38-27 lead with 3:32 left to play.

Central responded with two of their own. Then Western's Kevin McCann hit another three only to be answered by Central's Dean Martin. Foul after the shot, Central retained possession and when Derek Kelly drove for two, the Wolves were within seven.

But Central was running out of time and was forced to foul. This worked in Western's favor. Arnold hit both of his free throws with just over a minute to play. Then when Caleb Boileau missed the backed of his one-and-one, Tyler Ellis put the dagger in the Wolves by hitting a three to end Central's comeback hopes. Arnold finished the scoring by nailing both ends of his free throws to make the final 49-38.

Both teams shot well from the line with Western hitting 14 of 18 and Central shooting 12 of 15.

Corey Arnold led all scorers 23 points with Kevin McCann tallying eleven and Caleb Boileau with ten points.

Central was led by Shawn Everitt with eight while Deon Martin and Mike Schnepper added five.
