It has been a tough year so far for the Central Wolves. But in their first meeting with the Chemics, they saw something that they figured would work: pressure. Sprinkle a dose of Derek Kelly and the recipe is prime for a Wolf victory.

Central started the game by coming right out attacking and putting pressure on Midland. Using an aggressive zone defense, they were able to keep the Chemics from getting to the basket. Meanwhile, junior guard Derek Kelly was red hot hitting 4 of his first 5 shots to help lead Central to a 16-2 first quarter lead.

The Chemics started to come alive in the second quarter. They tightened up their defense denying Central a path to the basket. This tighter defense led to a few steals which translated into quick points. Central countered with their team speed while keeping aggressive and drawing fouls. By the half, Midland was only able to chip three points off the Central lead going into halftime down 23-12.

The second half saw both teams keeping with the defensive pressure to generate points off of their running game. Holding hot shooting Derek Kelly to just three points in the second and third quarter was a key to their resurgence. Before Midland could do much damage to Central's lead, the Wolves switched to a man-to-man defense which slowed the Chemic attack. Central was then able to come away with a 32-25 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Having seen their 14 point first quarter lead cut in half, Derek Kelly and company went back to work. First the Wolves took off their press which eliminated any press break buckets. They went back to their zone defense which helped cut off passes and allowed them to fill in the gaps. With scoring help from Deon Martin (15 points), Derek Kelly got loose for 7 fourth quarter points to build back the lead. Kelly hit a 3 pointer from the corner then followed it up with a baseline two to put the Wolves up by 13 points with just over two minutes left to play. Midland made a valiant effort to climb back into the game but the Wolves held them off down the stretch to earn a 47-39 win.

Derek Kelly led all scorers with 18 points with teammate Deon Martin adding 15.

Brandon Crane paced Midland with 10 points while Alex Barker added nine.
