Rotary Club to Hear Cliff Van Dyke Tuesday on Value, Future of DDAs

Rotary District 6310 Assembly/Conference Slated in Bay City Apr. 30-May 1

New printing facility for Bay City Times and Saginaw News is impressive addition to Valley Center Technology Park on Mackinaw Road in Monitor Township.
 

      Cliff VanDyke, one of the prime movers in development of Valley Center Technology Park, will take the Rotary Club rostrum on Tuesday, Feb. 10, to tell how the use of a Downtown Development Authority led to more than 20 businesses and more than 850 jobs in the park.      

VanDyke will replace Charlie Smith of Krzysiak's whose presentation will be rescheduled later in the Rotary year.

      Our speaker is a graduate of the Harvard Business School, Cambridge, Massachusetts, with a master's degree in business (MBA). A native of Illinois, he formerly was president of National City Bank, Bay City, First of America Bank, New Century Bank, and Peoples National Bank, and before that was an executive with National Bank of Detroit.

      He has been involved in many community and philanthropic activities and was instrumental in organizing the Junior Achievement program in Bay County.

      The Rotary Club board of directors will meet with President Rob Monroe on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 7:30 a.m. on the second floor of the Bay Regional Medical Center mental health building.

      Other upcoming Rotary Club programs include:

      Feb. 24, Tim Shelton, Hilton Doubletree Hotel and Conference Center opening slated, introduced by Larry LaPorte;

      Mar. 2, Al McFadyen, former City of Bay City development director now executive director of the Delhi Township, Ingham County, DDA, speaking on Lansing area economic development programs;

      Mar. 9, Vocational Days, with Associate Dean Dave Bledsoe of Delta College, speaking on Delta's $42 million Renovation II campus renewal project and technical trade and manufacturing facilities and programs; Dean Bledsoe will be introduced by Debra Lutz, vice president of business and finance of the college.(Vocational Days, chaired by Ralph Knop and Griffith Acker, DVM, involves dozens of high school students in daylong mentoring with Rotary members and attendance at the noon luncheon in the Holiday Inn.)

      Mar. 16: (Vocational Days), Tom Hollingsworth, president of Duro-Last Roofing, manufacturing firm with world headquarters in Saginaw, describing the global business scene. Hollingsworth will be introduced by Rotarian Jim Hollerbach.

      Mar. 23: Jason McCoy, executive of the regional office of the Boy Scouts of America, will take the Rotary microphone and will present a talk including a demonstration by Boy Scouts. McCoy also will be introduced by Jim Hollerbach.

      Mar. 30: Mike Seward, Bay Area Chamber of Commerce president, will take the rostrum to update Rotarians on chamber programs and activities. He will be introduced by Dave Rogers.

ROTARY DISTRICT 6310 ASSEMBLY AND CONFERENCE SET APR. 30-MAY 1

      The Rotary District 6310 Assembly and Conference will attract 200-300 Rotarians to Bay City on April 30-May 1, according to Hratch Basmadjian, conference chair.

      District Governor Jerome Yantz will preside at the two dayevent and will offer the official welcome on Saturday at 9 a.m. in the Holiday Inn, along with Bay City Mayor Robert Katt and RI Representative Frank Eberhardt of Canada.

      Ruby Iwamasa, of Midland, district governor-elect, will preside at the district assembly on Friday from 8:30-11:30 a.m., with luncheon in the Holiday Inn slated at noon.

      Rev. Andreas Teich will be in charge of registration from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.

      The annual business meeting willbe held 1:45—3:15 p.m. Friday in City Hall and will include the Yellow Rose Ceremony honoring all deceased Rotarians.

      Friday breakout sessions will be held 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Delta College Planetarium, where planetarium shows will be offered for attendees.

      A buffet dinner and Fun Night with live entertainment will be held at 6:45 p.m. Friday featuring youth exchange students and a flag ceremony.

      Saturday luncheon will be at the Holiday Inn 12-1:30 p.m. followed by a Bijou Orchestra matinee with show tunes under direction of Maestro Leo Najar at the State Theatre. Admission is part of your conference registration, or $22.

      Free trolley tours also will be available on Saturday.

      The gala dinner will be Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Hereford & Hops with a speaker.
