Amerilodge Group, of Rochester Hills, is one of only two developers still building hotels in the face of a tough recessionary period.

And one of the Amerilodge properties opened recently in the Holiday Inn Express and Suites on Wilder Road in Monitor Township, Bay County.

You've heard the statement: "If you build it they will come."

Well, that prediction came true in spades when hundreds of members of the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce flooded the new hotel last week for an ever-popular "Business After Hours" event.

Opened in December, the hotel is doing quite well, according to Terry Riddle, chief operating officer of Amerilodge Group.

That's a good sign in that Michigan's hotel occupancy rate lags nearly 10 percent behind the nation, according to Travel Michigan.

Terry Riddle, chief operating officer of Amerilodge, said the local hotel is the fifth to be built by the group recently in Michigan. Others were at Utica, Chesterfield Township, Grand Blanc, and Howell, along with Tipp City Ohio that is under construction.

Other properties in Michigan owned by the group include a Marriott in Fenton, Courtyard Inn in Battle Creek and Holiday Inn Express in Troy, said Mr. Riddle.

The Tri-City area of Bay City, Midland and Saginaw along with Arenac County's casino venue in fact is the focus of several hotel developers who must see something convincing in the area's potential. Several hotels are either being built or proposed for the region including an Intercontinental Hotels Group property in Midland.

The new Holiday Inn property here has 58 rooms, a fitness center, pool and other amenities on two floors.

Chamber Ambassadors on hand at the event include, from left, Norma Matthew, Choice Office Products; Sandy Loomis, Chemical Bank; Mark Delestowicz, Independent Bank; and Sandy Pope, AAA Michigan.
