Future leaders of The Dow Chemical Co. will soon be taking a special graduate level training program through Midland's Northwood University.

Northwood's new global executive program leading to the master of business administration (MBA) degree will begin with Dow employees who are identified as leaders and later will be extended to other executives outside the chemical industry.

The program, scheduled to start in May, is under direction of Dr. Timothy Nash, dean of the Richard DeVos Graduate School of Management at Northwood.

The program involves 42 credit hours of graduate level coursework in four years. Students can choose direct classroom sessions or other programs offered in the U.S., in Europe, or through directed study on the Internet through the website www.Study.net.

The DeVos Graduate School of Management marked its 10th year in 2003. It has branches in Lansing and Troy, as well as Midland. Three learning paths are available at the school: traditional, managerial and executive. Dr. Nash describes the graduate program as "case-based." He explains in an article in the Northwood Idea, the Journal of Northwood University, that case-based study involves observation and analysis of the activities of actual firms, rather than just theoretical issues.

Among its 428 graduates now in 20 countries are presidents of major corporations such as Bob Rossiter, chairman and CEO of Lear Corp.; John Hantz, president and CEOof the Hantz Group; and William Parlberg, president and COO of Zehnder's of Frankenmuth. Parlberg's rise has been most impressive since he started as a dishwasher at Zehnder's while in high school. After earning his bachelor's degree from Northwood in 1979, he worked his way up in the Zehnder organization to vice president of operations and now is president and chief operating officer.

Rossiter earned both his BBA/management degree and his graduate degree through the Northwood extension program, called University College. The Idea states "Rossiter has spearheaded Lear's growth into the world's largest automotive interior systems supplier by focusing on the basic ingredients of entrepreneurship." Northwood University President David Fry says: "He makes everyone an entrepreneur -- and it creates magic in the company." Rossiter says the Northwood Idea, which focuses on experiential learning, ably fits students for management careers.

The graduate school gained its name from longtime Northwood supporter Richard M. DeVos, co-founder of the Amway Corp., Grand Rapids, who provided a major endowment for graduate study.

The school publishes an e-newsletter, the Devos Alumni Quarterly, for alumni, which may be subscribed to at www.northwood.edu/scr/devos/newsletter/.
