After fighting their way to the state quarter finals, the All Saints Cougars were just one win away from reaching the Breslin Center, and the State finals. Unfortunately, the Cougar were up against the Sterling Heights Parkway Christian Eagles. The Eagles rode into the quarter finals with only three losses throughout their entire season. Needless to say, the Cougars were a little intimidated by their opponents, but were determined to come out on top.

Only a minute after winning the tip-off, the Eagles welcomed the Cougars to the court with a quick pass to #33 Zurlon Tipton who dunked it to put the Eagles up by 2. The Cougar defenders managed to hold off the Eagles offense for a brief period of time, but that came to a quick end when the Eagles connected on a 3-point shot to put them ahead 5-0. The Cougars retreated to their bench for a timeout to change tactics.

The Cougar came back out on the court and fought back against the Eagles stubborn defenders. The Cougars tacked on their first 2-pointer and from there it was a battle to try to take the lead for All Saints. The Cougars fought hard, but all their scores were quickly answered by the Eagles offense. At the conclusion of the first period, the Cougars had narrowed the deficit and were down 12-11.

Once again, the Eagles came out strong in the early moments of the period. A pair of 2-pointer put them ahead 16-11 - but #14 Cameron Coburn wasn't panicking. Coburn put the Cougars back within striking distance with a 3-pointer and a free-throw point from a corresponding foul. But the Cougars relief was short lived. The Eagles offense stepped up their game even more and capitalized on all the Cougars mistakes. The Cougars managed to scrape up a few more points, but at the end of the first half they faced a 7 point deficit with the score at 27-20.

The Eagles showed the Cougars no mercy in the opening moments of the third period. The Cougars took a beating on the scoreboard, and, after only four minutes, faced a 35-26 score on the board. All Saints head coach Mike Showalter called a time out to get his team focused. Whatever he said, it sure worked. Cougar #33 BJ Weaver started things off with an easy 2-pointer. The Cougars rallied and, working together, managed to put themselves back on the heels of the eagles. At the end of the third period the Cougars were down 37-33. With only one period left, it was time to do-or-die for the Cougars.

The early minutes of the final period were a desperate time for the Cougars. The Cougars battled hard for every point they could, but their efforts were matched by the Eagles surging offense. The Cougars managed to keep themselves within 6 points of catching the Eagles and, at one point, narrowed the score to 46-41. Unfortunately for All Saints, fouls and a few more turnovers gave the Eagles just what they needed to rebuild their lead. Though the Cougars were able to score a few last minute 3-pointers, it was too little too late. The Eagles carried the day 61-54.

Despite the bitter loss, Coach Mike Showalter said the "Senior leadership was outstanding tonight." Showalter said he enjoyed this season and that he and the Cougars "Made some nice memories." A key component of next years Cougars; #20 Adam Pijaszek, says "We have a promising future, as long as we work as hard as we did this year we can make it just as far, if not further." Echoing Pijaszek's sentiment, #34 Demario Walker said of his final season with All Saints: "It was a good ball season - this wont be the last time you see All Saints here."

Kevin, just wanted to say thanks for all your hard work this year covering the boys and girls basketball seasons. It was always great to see and ultimately relive all these games as a parent through your work... I'm sure the many other parents would agree as well. It also was a great way for friends and family alike (from out of town) to read about, and see their nieces and nephews, and find out how they've done on the hard court.
Agree? or Disagree?
