Winter's last days in Bay City

Frozen mornings yield to warming afternoons and melting snow.

Last Friday Bay City woke to one of winter's most beautiful displays. There was a heavy fog over the river, the air temp was in the twenties, and there was no wind. That's the combination needed to produce "hoarfrost" which Webster defines as "white, frozen dew on the ground, leaves, etc.; white frost; rime".

Whatever you call it, the frost on Friday flocked the trees, fences, grass, and even wires with pure white as beautiful as any Christmas tree.

As the day wore on, the sun burned the fog away and the temperature rose to the mid 40's. Even so, the lack of wind allowed the frost to remain on the north facing surfaces almost all day.

Warmingtemperatures and bright skys have a way of bring out an interesting mix of activities. On the river walk the photographer shot ice fishermen bundled up in the middle of the frozen Saginaw River and turned to other direction to see a man walking his pairof English Mastifs and shortly after that a young lady roller blading with her dog.

For nature lovers, it's exciting to spot returning birds. Doves are checking out theirnest from last year, blue jays are calling, and the neighborhood cardinal is patrolling his teritory.

Despite the early signs of Spring, it's still only the beginning of March. Enjoy the bright weather while you can... Winter could return for another blast of cold.
