Saginaw Future Inc., the county-wide economic development agency serving Saginaw County, MI, USA strongly supports Consumer's Energy's plans to build a new state-of-the-art coal plant at the Karn-Weadock generating complex near Bay City, MI, USA.

The Great Lakes Bay Economic Development Partnership has recently undertaken a new initiative to attract solar related industries to the region, which will help create base jobs, provide new investment and diversify the local economy.

In order for the Great Lakes Bay Region to remain competitive in the world marketplace, reliable and consistent base-load energy sources are needed to attract these new manufacturers and to retain our existing manufacturing base. The proposed plant will help meet this need by providing the latest technology while at the same time reducing carbon emissions significantly.

The new power plant will generate tremendous economic benefits that will pump new life into our communities. The new plant will inject a billion dollars of new investment into the local economy creating 1,800 direct construction jobs at the site during the construction phase and a minimum of 100 new permanent base jobs when the plant is operational.

These construction and base jobs will also have a positive spin-off effect with more than 2,000 indirect jobs being created in the community during the peak construction phase and 250 more permanent indirect jobs created once the plant is operational.

This all comes at a time when the construction industry has been hit hard through this latest recession and the State of Michigan has seen more loss in manufacturers and manufacturing jobs than any other state.

Consumers Energy has proven its ability to serve customers safely. Building one of the world's cleanest coal plants is simply the next step in a commitment to Michigan that stretches back more than a century.

Saginaw Future and its Board of Directors urge decision makers at the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) to approve the air permit application that allows the project to move ahead.

The MDEQ should approve the air permit to ensure that Michigan has the electricity to meet its needs for years to come and the new clean coal plant will have much lower emissions than the older generating facilities.

Steve Jonas, executive vice president of Saginaw Future Inc., will testify at a Public Hearing being held by the MDEQ this week to speak in support of Consumer Energy's proposed new power plant and air permit.

Established in 1992, Saginaw Future Inc. (SFI) is a public-private alliance of local businesses, the County of Saginaw, City of Saginaw, 16 local municipalities and the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce.

SFI's strategic partners also include education, labor and government. Since its beginning, SFI has remained dedicated to fostering quality job creation through expansion of local industry and attraction of new business projects to the community.
