Frankenmuth Farmers Market 8am-2pm Saturdays, May 16 to October 17, 2009

The Frankenmuth Farmers Market (FFM) begins its fifth year of food, fun, and festivity on Saturday, May 16 in downtown Frankenmuth.

With the mission to entertain, enrich, and educate growers and consumers as they trade local products and information, the Market runs 8am-2pm Saturdays May 16 to October 17, with a Christkindlmarkt (traditional European Christmas Market) Thanksgiving Weekend, November 27-29. Free parking is behind the Market, near Cass and Main St.

The Frankenmuth Farmers Market is a producer-only market, with a few board-approved Michigan-grown items offering increased diversity. This significantly impacts the local economy while live music, adult and children events, and artists create a festival of community each market day. Many special plans are lined up for a fantastic year, with an Annual Meeting on April 22 featuring a Rapid Market Analysis report by Susan Smalley, Director of C.S. Mott Group for Sustainable Food Systems.

Another annual Market Magazine will be distributed as a series of three inserts in the Frankenmuth News. The market will participate in this year's Frankenmuth Bavarian Festival, themed "Celebrating the Franconian Farming Community." The board of directors is working with Northwood University to prepare a business plan and strategic marketing assessment. On Saturday, November 28, the Market is partnering with national tour group Learn Great Foods for a "Festive Seasonings Farmers Market Tour" with vendor interviews, cooking demos, a five-course meal, and more. Tickets are on sale now.

Consumers are invited to join an e-newsletter list by emailing dbronner@chartermi.net. The Market is looking for set-up, take-down, and booth volunteers, as well as $25 or $50 donations to the Frankenmuth Farmers Market to sponsor daily events or entire market days. Donations can be mailed to Laurajeanne Kehn, 11585 King Road, Frankenmuth, MI 48734.

Market offerings include fresh, local produce, fresh coffee and soup, organic breads and grains, hand-made soaps, baked goods, herbs, bedding and potted plants, flowers, native Michigan plant species, other spring goods, and more. Free live music, informational events, children's activities, and local artists every Saturday make for a very interactive Market as producers and consumers exchange fresh, local products while educating each other, inspiring community, and keeping our rural heritage alive.

The market is a proud charter member of the Michigan Farmers Market Association. FFM Chair Dietrich Bronner also chairs the board of directors for the state association. Farmers, markets, organizations, and consumers can join "MIFMA" to help move farmers markets forward by visiting www.farmersmarkets.msu.edu.
