State Representative Jeff Mayes (D-Bay City) has thrown his support behind a bipartisan plan to strengthen the rights of Michigan residents to hunt, trap, fish or harvest game and wildlife on state property. The resolution calls for an amendment to the state constitution through a statewide ballot proposal during the next general election in 2010.

"Michigan is a prime destination for hunters and anglers," Mayes said. "With the huge economic impact this industry has on our state, we must make certain that Michigan businesses continue to benefit from these important tourism dollars. By ensuring these rights for Michigan residents, we not only protect an important Michigan tradition, we're strengthening our economy."

Under the joint resolution, which must be approved by two-thirds of both the House and Senate in order to go before the voters in the 2010 general election, the state constitution would be amended to recognize the rights of residents to hunt, trap and fish on public lands.

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, hunting contributes an estimated $1 billion directly into the state's economy, while sport fishing's economic impact exceeds $2 billion annually. Michigan currently has 8 million acres of public hunting land and more than 750,000 licensed hunters, ranking the state third in the nation. An estimated 2 million anglers fish on Michigan waters every year.

"Hunting and fishing are part of our heritage here in Michigan, and with this plan, we can preserve this legacy for generations to come," Mayes said. "As we work to protect the great natural areas that make the Great Lakes State green and vibrant, we must ensure that those who continue these traditions are able to enjoy them. I'm proud to be working with members of both parties to defend these rights for all Michigan residents."
