Frankenmuth Ladies Edge Garber In 14 Innings, 1-0

It is always a hard fought softball game when these two teams play. And while everyone knew this would be a hard fought battle, no one could have foreseen this quality of hard play. Tough clutch pitching, exceptional defensive plays and coaching strategies all played into this classic battle.
Frankenmuth's Heather Schultz set the tone by striking out the side in the first inning. Garber's Kara Brewer, celebrating her birthday, kept the Eagles in check as well and the marathon was on.
Garber had the first scoring threat in the top of the fourth inning when Molly Braun singled and Caitlyn Keuvelaar lined a double to the left center fence. But two perfect relay throws by centerfielder Sarah Rummel to shortstop Samantha Cormier who turned and threw a strike to catcher Mary Ellen Seuter gunned down the speedy Braun keeping the game scoreless.
Neither team could generate any offense as terrific pitching and stellar defense kept each team from generating a rally. Garber seized the next scoring opportunity in the ninth. Rachel Bowker led off with a bunt single. Then Janelle Urban and Molly Braun bunted her around to third. Frankenmuth then elected to walk Caitlyn Keuvelaar who was 2 for 2 on the day. The strategy paid off as Schultz struck out the next batter to end the inning.
Brewer continued to keep the Eagles in check as they could not muster a scoring threat against the junior pitcher. She allowed a runner to reach second base in only the second, seventh and ninth innings, the later two with two outs.
Garber threatened in the twelfth on an interesting coaching move. Caitlyn Keuvelaar led off and was intentionally walked. Katie Neering then singled when she pushed a sacrifice bunt past the drawn in third baseman putting runners on first and second with no outs. Schultz then bared down getting the next three batters out on a pop up on a bunt attempt, a ground out to short forcing Keuvelaar at third and striking out the next batter for the third out.
Frankenmuth had their first scoring opportunity in the bottom of the thirteenth inning. Samantha Hawkins led off with a single but was gunned down attempting to steal second. Rummel singled with two outs and Schultz followed with a single putting runners on first and second with two outs. Cormier then lined a potential winning hit right back at Brewer for an out to end the threat.
The fourteenth and final inning saw Coach Jow Chowaniec of Frankenmuth employ the same strategy as they did in the twelfth. After getting the lead off batter out, the Eagles again intentionally walked Keuvelaar, the third intentional walk and fourth walk of the game, putting the lead run on base. Schultz still pitching strong got the next two hitters to end any chance of a threat.
Frankenmuth then put together their first major scoring threat of the game and made it count. Jordan Skiba lead off with a single down the left field line. After the next batter struck out, Chelsie Bender walked and Mary Ellen Sueter loaded the bases on a single. Hawkins then hit a single over the drawn in leftfielder's head for the winning run.
Schultz pitched all fourteen innings for Frankenmuth allowing six hits while striking out sixteen and walking four. Brewer pitched all fourteen innings for Garber giving up ten hits while striking out nine and walking four.
Frankenmuth was lead by Mary Ellen Sueter who had three hits with Schultz and Skiba collecting two apiece. Garber was lead by Caitlyn Keuvelaar who had two hits to go with her four walks.
