While our high schools have excellent facilities, it is always special to play in a stadium. Saturday night, Garber hosted Pinconning in Garber's annual "Under the Lights" contest. The teams invaded the Duke Football Stadium under near cloudless skies but with temperatures more fitting of a fall game. Nonetheless, the action was still hot on the field.

Garber drew first blood three minutes into the contest. When the inbound pass was kicked forward, the Pinconning defender fumbled it allowing Rebecca Pierce to kick the ball over to Shayna Streu. Streu passed it right back to Pierce who put it in the top corner for a goal putting Garber ahead 1-0.

Garber would make it 2-0 just six minutes later. After Pinconning had put on some pressure, keeper Karlie Penn kicked the ball up field. This ball was forwarded to Garber's Hillaire Dukarski who took it up the left side on a breakaway. A cross field pass found Streu as she beat her defender knock the ball in for a goal.

Near the half way point of the first half, Garber was again knocking on the door. After a Spartan defender blocked a would be goal with her hand, Dukarski was awarded a penalty kick. Pinconning keeper, Ali Daniels came up big as she made the initial save then stopped the rebound by Courtney Thompson.

These saves gave Pinconning a lift as they looked to put offensive pressure on Garber. Near breakaways by the Spartans' Taylor Nickel were thwarted time and time again as the Lady Duke defense which was led by Alex Weiss and Leslie Stuifbergen. While the Spartans generated pressure, the Garber defense kept shots to long range allowing keeper Karlie Penn to keep Pinconning scoreless.

As the lights came on for the second half, so did the Lady Dukes. They used crisp passing and ball control to put constant pressure on the Spartan net minder. But inspired play by Pinconning's Daniels held off the Lady Dukes for eighteen minutes until Morgan Scharich hit a long shot over Daniels head making it 3-0.

Garber tallied again five minutes later. Scharich lofted a long pass to the speedy Streu, who made a sliding kick pass across to Rebecca Pierce. Pierce buried it in the left corner making it 4-0 Garber. The Dukes weren't done yet. As the outside speed of Streu and Thompson wore Pinconning down, Garber scored again. Streu passed to Scharich who fired a cross field pass to Pierce. Pierce then bumped it to Dukarski who buried the shot making it 5-0, the eventual final score.

Pinconning continued to look to dent the net by striving for breakaways. But Weiss and Stuifbergen cut off any attempts while Tory Steward and Emmy Hadd swooped in to move the ball back up field.

On the night, Pinconning's Ali Daniels faced 34 shots most of them in the second half. Garber's Karlie Penn faced 12 shots with most of the quality shots occurring in the first half.

Regardless of the score, both teams clearly enjoyed the night time experience as did the enthusiastic fans.
