Lady Cougars Claim 2009 Softball District Title

Though their ultimate goal is to return to the State Finals, the Cougar Ladies first had to battle their way through two determined teams in the District round. Apart from a last minute comeback from Merrill in the second game, the Cougars had little trouble securing a consecutive District Title.

The Cougars' first obstacle in the post season was a determined group of girls from Breckenridge. The Cougars struck first with a sacrifice from #7 Danielle Christensen that brought in #16 Kaylee Niemiec who was running for All Saints' star pitcher #14 Louise Rezmer; and it was easy coasting for All Saints from there.

All Saints scored four more times, twice off of home runs from Christensen and Rezmer, to the delight of the Cougar fans who had come to cheer them on. Louise Rezmer struck out 13 Breckenridge batters in the game, and the Cougar fielders took care of the rest, to allow All Saints to shutout Breckenridge 5-0.

The Cougar Ladies then went on to face Merrill in the District Championship game. The Cougars' offense was hot during this game; the Cougars scored a total of twelve times! But in the end, the score was closer than the girls would've liked it to be. Pitcher #14 Louise Rezmer started the second game for All Saints and had nine strikeouts in only four innings, including two consecutive no hitters in the third and fourth innings.

All Saints then sent out #6 Taylor Timm to take over for Rezmer. Things continued to be upbeat for the Cougars until the sixth inning. Undaunted by two outs on the board, Merrill's hitters finally found their groove. Two Cougar errors and a salvo of Merrill hits, including a triple from #5 Deshiar, killed the possibility of a mercy and made the score 9-6.

The Cougars answered Merrill's surge with three more runs, widening the gap to 12-6. All Saints put Rezmer back on the mound and Merrill was only able to score one last run before bowing out to All Saints 12-7.

With these wins in the books, the Cougars have earned a ticket to the Regionals where they plan to earn their third Regional title in as many years.
