One year ago the All Saints Cougars were en-route to a State Championship Victory. Now that this years Cougars have survived the District round, they are just five wins away from a repeat of last year's historic season.

The Cougars had their hands full in the District semi-finals and District Finals though. The Cougars first had to take out Breckenridge, before they could face off against Michigan Lutheran Seminary in the District Championship game. The Cougars took the first one without too much difficulty, but MLS gave them a run for their money and, in the end, it was the Cougars experience and determination that triumphed.

Breckenridge came out strong in the first inning of their showdown with the defending champion Cougars. Breckenridge capitalized on what All Saints head coach Mike Regulski later called "first round jitters" when their lead batter #4 Beebe hit a triple off of All Saints pitcher #6 Adam Pijaszek. Beebe scored one batter later off a Cougar error. But the Cougars woke up and sent the next three batters back to the dugout empty handed off of two strikeouts and an out at first.

Undaunted by the 1-0 deficit on the board, the Cougars came out swinging in the bottom of the opening inning. After watching lead batter #1 Josh Sutton strike out, Adam Pijaszek got on base with a single and was then advanced to second off a single from #3 Aaron Janer. #7 Kevin Gwizdala got himself to first base off a sacrifice and an error that also allowed Pijaszek's courtesy runner, #8 BJ Weaver and Janer to both advance a base. Then #18 Thomas Villano hit a single that drove in Weaver to knot it up 1-1. Janer then capitalized on a mistake from Breckenridge's catcher and stole home. To top off the inning, #21 Justin Villano hit a single that brought in Gwizdala's courtesy runner, #11 Kevin Bisel.

With All Saints up 3-1, the Cougars shutout Breckenridge in the second inning with a fly ball caught by #14 Kevin Jakubczak, and then two more Pijaszek strikeouts. Back on the attack, #1 Sutton and #3 Janer scored off a single from #18 Thomas Villano that was mishandled by Breckenridge. Up 5-1 the Cougars pitchers, and fielders were flawless on defense and shutout Breckenridge the rest of the game to win 5-1.

The Cougars then went on to take on Michigan Lutheran Seminary in the District Championship game. Things were going well at first for All Saints. Aaron Janer scored off a double from #7 Kevin Gwizdala, Gwizdala's courtesy runner Kevin Bisel scored off a single from #4 Justin Gielda, and then #18 Thomas Villano crossed home plate to put his team up 3-0 off a hit from his brother #21 Justin Villano.

The second inning didn't go so well for the Cougars. All Saints pitcher #12 Drew Bauer looked a little shaky on the mound and MLS capitalized on that fact. MLS scored four runs before All Saints was finally able to silence their momentum.

Down 4-3 in a championship game is a scenario most teams would never want to face. But the Cougars have been in that situation before; and, when under pressure, they truly play their best. The Cougars allowed only one more run to slip by their defense but scored four runs of their own to clinch the District Title and their ticket to the Regionals, which they will host at home.

Senior Matt Mikolajczak comes in the close the game.

While the Cougars clearly have their sight set on a repeat of last year, the team admits it's a "relief to have survived districts." When asked his thought about winning districts Aaron Janer said "it's great to have won districts again, now there's just five more wins to go!"
