As conflicts rage across the globe in such places as North Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan and the Sudan, many people wonder if there will ever be world peace. Christa McAuliffe Middle School recently had a dedication ceremony to promote world peace, right here in Bay City!

Several weeks ago Delta College planted and dedicated a Peace Pole on the grounds of the college. Knowing the importance of recycling and being environmentally sound, wood from the old gym bleachers was used to build the pole.

Delta College made many Peace Poles that were sent to Kenya, Japan and one to Christa McAuliffe Middle School in Bay City.

Present for the ceremony were State Representative Jeff Mayes, Township Supervisor Mr. Watson, Superintendent Dr. Tina Kerr and Delta College teacher Mr. Bledsoe who donated the Peace Pole to the school.

The Peace Pole proclaims the words "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in six different languages, English, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin, Chinese and Swahili. It also contains the words in sign language.

By planting the Peace Pole, Christa McAuliffe linked itself with people all over the world who have planted poles in the spirit of peace.

More than 200,000 peace pole locations include the Hiroshima Peace Memorial in Japan, the former World Trade Center site in New York City, South Africa's Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, the Pyramids of El Giza in Egypt, the Magnetic North Pole in Canada and at the site of the former Berlin Wall. They all promote healing of conflict in all parts of the world.

Representatives from the school were picked for the unveiling of the CMMS pole. Eight grade students were chosen by their teachers as students of character, who painted and planted the pole. Coach Hartt was chosen because he teaches peace through friendly competition and sportsmanship for over 25 years in Bangor. Superintendent Dr. Kerr and Principal Diane Tuttle were chosen because their jobs require keeping peace in the district among students, staff, parents and community members. Ms. Schlitt was chosen because each and every day she promotes peace to the school as the RTC coordinator.

Sixth grade students came forward to recite "May Peace Prevail on Earth" in all languages found on their peace pole.

As students headed back into the school following the ceremony, they were asked by Ms. Gradowski, CCMS teacher and track and swimming coach, the following. "If you throw open your locker and it bumps your neighbor, say your sorry. If you have the urge to push and shove to get out the school doors first, don't. If you compete in baseball or a softball game, whether you win or lose, shake hands with your opponents. With these actions, you'll have your own personal start to world peach," said Gradowski.
