State Representative Jeff Mayes (D-Bay City) was recently named as one of Michigan's "Most Effective" legislators, tying for fourth out of the 110 member body. The poll, conducted for MIRS news service by EPIC/MRA, surveyed lawmakers from the House and Senate, members of the executive branch and other officials.

"I'm honored to receive this recognition from my colleagues," said Mayes, Chair of the House Energy and Technology Committee. "We need to look past the partisanship and see that a good idea is a good idea, regardless of who proposed it. With the recent bankruptcies of two of our Michigan automakers underscoring the challenge that lies ahead for our state, we need to be working together to attract new businesses and create jobs for our workers."

The poll of roughly 300 lawmakers and officials took place over three weeks, and surveyed their opinions of which legislators were most effective. Out of the 110 House members, Mayes tied for fourth with the Chair of the powerful House Appropriations Committee.

Mayes has already seen much of his legislation pass through the House this year. Following the freezing death of Bay City resident Marvin Schur this past winter, the House passed Mayes' comprehensive plan to reform the way the state handles utility shutoffs in order to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.

Mayes' plan to attract new businesses emerging industries by strengthening "anchor zones" also passed the House, which will also help companies like Hemlock Semiconductor take advantage of tax credits in order to grow their businesses.
