In the case of the All Saints varsity softball team, the last thing they wanted was to face U.S.A. in the first round of the Regionals. The last time the Cougar ladies met the #1 ranked U.S.A. girls on the field, All Saints suffered two crushing defeats. With the memory of those two losses in the back of their minds, the Cougar ladies knew that only their best game would be enough to defeat the U.S.A. Patriots.

Things got off to a good start for the Cougars. The first Patriot batter hit a single off of All Saints' star pitcher Louise Rezmer #14, but then the second batter was thrown out at first, and the next two batters struck out against Louise.

Unfortunately, the same problem that plagued the Cougars last time they faced the Patriots was back to haunt them. The Cougars offense just couldn't get anything going against the Patriots stellar defense. Louise led off for All Saints and hit a double, but the next three consecutive batter went down swinging. U.S.A.'s pitcher Jillian Williamson #12 was just too much for the Cougars ailing offense.

The Cougars did their best to defend against the Patriots in the top of the second, but the Patriots managed to score their first run before the Cougars could stop them. Back on the attack, the Cougars offense was suppressed yet again. Two force outs at first, and a strike out ended the Cougars turn at bat after only a few minutes.

The Patriots struck again in the top of the third inning. Dani Gremel #5 crushed one deep into left field and over the fence for a home run; luckily for the Cougars no one was on base when this happened. Undaunted by the home run, Louise struck out the last batter for the third out.

After another disappointing at bats for the Cougars, the Patriots added another run to their total off a single from Martinez #15 that drove in Williamson to put U.S.A. up 3-0. After a quick pep talk on the mound with Coach Brad Walraven, Louise sent the next three Patriot batter back to the dugout empty handed.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Patriots added their last point to the board. Jen Williamson #6, scored off a single from her sister Jillian.

Facing a 4-0 deficit, the Cougars tried valiantly to score some runs in their final two turns at bat, but both ended fruitless for All Saints. Patriot pitcher Jillian Williamson struck out thirteen Cougar batters, and six Cougars were thrown out at first. All-in-all, only four Cougars ever got on base, and none of them were able to make it as far as third base.

Sadly, the Cougar Ladies dreams of a repeat of last years state championship have ended; but as they hang up their gloves for another year they can be proud that they added another district trophy to All Saints trophy case.
