Contrary to rumors, work has not been suspended on the Center Avenue water-sewer project.

However, work is slowed while waterlines that have been installed are being tested.

City residents are destined to have to deal with construction on Center Avenue until mid-November.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and contractor Six S Contracting of Waterford, in north Oakland County, are coordinating closely with city officials and local residents to minimize traffic problems and access to homes.

The project supervised by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is eliminating two parallel six inch cast iron water mains that are more than 100 years old. A single 12 inch ductile iron water main will replace the old mains. The city will replace water service with copper pipe from the water main to the curb stop shutoff in front of each house. The contractor will connect to the existing water service pipe. the homeowner is responsible for the portion of the water service from the city curb stop to inside the house.

City sources have released the following information as a service to residents and local travelers:

  • Water purity tests are expected to take about two weeks; then water connections to individual properties will be made.

  • Concrete will be removed in the two westbound (north) lanes proceeding east from Johnson during the last two weeks of July. Property owners can reopen their drive approaches with temporary ramps, taking care to avoid damaging gas lines buried a foot deep.

  • Paving will be done in late June through mid-July on the two eastbound (south) lanes, drive approaches and intersections.

  • Paving of the two westbound (north) lanes is scheduled mid-August through mid-October.

  • Work will continue on intersections, some of which will be closed.

  • The center lane will be the last to be paved and will be colored and stamped to resemble brick.

  • Cleanup will occur mid-October through mid-November.

  • The road is slated to open to all traffic by mid-November.

Status of intersections is as follows: Carroll, closed until reconstructed; Center Court, open; Green, closed until reconstructed; Hayes Drive, remains open; Johnson, open; Livingston, open; Park, open; Pendleton, closed until reconstructed; Trumbull, southbound lane open, northbound lane closed; Wells Court, open.

Parking is allowed on side streets a block north and south of Center where Center is closed (Pendleton, Park, Green, Livingston). One lane must remain open always for fire trucks and/or ambulances.

Area residents seeking information are urged to call the city hotline 894-8302 or contact city liaison team members Patti Stowell, 894-8227 or 892-1896; or Warren Smith, 892-5649; or Hampton Township liaison Johanne Luth, 892-5037.
