Announce 2009 Inductees

Induction Banquet to Be Held October 25, 2009 at the Doubletree Hotel

Bay County Sports Hall of Fame Board Members recently announced 2009 Inductees.

The Nomination and screening for induction starts in January through March. There is a full board review in April. Ballots are mailed out to voting life members in May. Ballots are then counted in June. Inductee are notified in July.

The Hall of Fame Board of Directors meet with the Sports Editor of the Bay City Times and sets a schedule for weekly profiles of all elected inductees. Preparation for the Banquet continues through August, September and October. Induction Banquet is held each year in October.

This year is the 19th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Banquet held at DoubleTree Hotel and Conference Center in downtown Bay City on Sunday, October 25, 2009. Rod Adams will be the Master of Ceremonies.

Bay County Sports Hall of Fame Board of Officers include:

O.J. Cunningham - President, Bob Darbee - Vice President, Bill Herrera - Treasurer, Barney Glowicki - Recording Secretary.

2009 Directors include: Vaughn Begick, Esther Conners, Mike Gwizdala, Neil Kent, Pat O'Shea, Dave Rogers, Robert Adamowski, and Tim Tobin.

2009 Bay County Sports Hall of Fame Inductees include the following.

  • JAMES CHESNEY- football, basketball, track, coach
    Jim was quarterback at Bay City Central, playing quarterback and defensive safety. He was 1st team All City and 2nd Team All Conference his junior year and in his senior year was 1st team All City and was All Valley and All State Associated Press and Detroit Free Press as well as a nominee for high school All American. He was point guard three years in basketball, led his team in scoring and was All Conference his senior year. He won the BCC Sports Club Academic Scholarship, Athlete of the Year Award and was All State. He lettered four years in track as a pole vaulter. At Michigan State University, Jim was a football team member four years and lettered his senior year. Chesney is a member of the Oak Park Illinois High School Hall of Fame.


  • PATRICK O'SHEA - football, coach
    One of a handful of players ever to repeat as Coca Cola Golden Helmet winner was Patrick O'Shea of T.L. Handy High. An All State running back and linebacker in both the Detroit Free Press and Associated Press polls and Detroit News All State linebacker, O'Shea was named All American. He was Most Valuable Player for Handy and runner-up for that honor in the Saginaw Valley League. He led all Class A running backs for two years in Bay County, averaging over 125 yards a game against arch-rival Bay City Central. He rushed for 2,128 yards, averaging six yards a carry and scoring 178 points during his Senior Year at Handy High School. He was second leading tackler on defense for the Chips his senior year. He has been a youth sports coach for many years.


  • JOHN E. PIKE - basketball, coach, author
    John was a three year starter in basketball at Bay City All Saints and was county scoring champ two years. He won first team All State honors by the Associated Press and United Press International and his team reached the state semi-finals. After two years at Delta College where he won All-League honors, John played two years for Hillsdale College. He coached basketball at Bad Axe High three years, was prep basketball coach at the U.S. Military Academy for 25 years and assistant basketball coach at Army for 17 years. He has nine technical basketball publications to his credit.


  • BRAD WALRAVEN - softball
    Brad's softball teams at Bay City All Saints have won four State titles, most recently in 2008. He is in his 30th year of coaching, was State Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2008 and was inducted into the State Hall of Fame. He entered the 900 Win Club on May 16 with a victory over Gaylord St. Mary. He was nominated for National Coach of the Year and was named Regional Coach of the Year, one of eight finalists for the national honor. Brad played baseball at All Saints where he graduated in 1978. He began coaching softball for the Cougars at age 19. His teams went to the state tournament five years in a row in the 1990s. Brad has his own accounting firm, Saginaw Valley Business Systems, in Saginaw.

  • JOANNE WEAVER - little league baseball
    Joanne Weaver has been involved in Little League baseball in Bay City ever since her oldest son signed up to play over 35 years ago. Joanne has served the Southwest Little League in every way - from being President to selling hotdogs in the concession stand. Joanne stresses fundamentals, sportsmanship and a sense of fair play. "It's all about cooperation and discipline," Weaver said in a Bay City Times interview a few years ago. "She's always been there for the kids," is the phrase that you hear most when people talk about Joanne Weaver. "Dedication" and "Commitment" are words that are always used to describe her when her name is discussed.


  • JEFF WILLIAMS - baseball, wrestling, football, track and volleyball coach
    Jeff won three varsity letters in baseball and was team captain at Pinconning High and was a varsity wrestler. He coached football and track in the Detroit area and was offensive coordinator at Michigan Tech 1972-76. His Pinconning Spartans gridders chalked up a 37-16 record in six seasons. He was Regional Coach of the Year in 1981 when the team went undefeated, first for Pinconning in 21 years. His volleyball coaching mark in nine seasons was 476-77-33 with league, district and regional championships. He was State Volleyball Coach of the Year in 1992. At Northwood University he was three times NAIA Coach of the Year and his teams twice finished ninth in the NAIA Nationals.


  • HOWARD F. (SLIM) ELZINGA (Deceased) - basketball, baseball, football, track and field
    The Central Michigan University Athletic Hall of Fame describes Howard Elzinga as a "Versatile Four Sport Athlete." Nick-named "Polecat", Slim earned a total of 13 letters with Central State Teachers College (now CMU), graduating in 1940. He won four letters in basketball and three each in baseball, football and track. He established a school pole vault record that lasted until 1950 and was listed as an end on the 1969 All-Time CMU Football Team. Howard led the basketball team in scoring three times, setting a single-season mark of 201 points in 1939 and a career standard of 495 points. He spent 27 years coaching and as athletic director at Mio, Pigeon, Grant, Zeeland and Bay City Handy High, retiring in 1977. Howard served as a Navy pilot in World War II.


  • JOHN P. (JACK) SULLIVAN (Deceased) - football, basketball, baseball, coach
    In one of the most unusual instances in local sports, Jack Sullivan was a starter on the St. Mary High basketball team as an eighth grader. The lanky cager played three years for the Shillelaghs and was named to the All-City team in 1926 and twice to All Parochial League teams. In football, Jack was on the State Champion runner-up Team. Jack left school to work at the Murray Body Factory and later joined the police force, retiring as captain. He played independent basketball for many years and was on the Phoenix Brewery and Bay City Police semi-pro baseball teams as an infielder. He coached St. Mary to the Class C State runner-up toga in football and to the State title in baseball in 1932.


  • Tickets for the Induction Banquet are $35 per person and can be purchased from Hall of Fame President O. J. Cunningham (989-892-8501), Vice President Bob Darbee (989-714-5830).

    Festivities begin at DoubleTree with a cash bar and social hour (3:00pm - 4:30pm). Dinner is at 4:30pm and the installation of inductees will begin promptly at 6:00pm.

    A silent auction and 50/50 drawing will also be held.
