My Son Made All-Stars! But Which One

Recently I was talking with a friend who was proudly informing me that her two grandsons made the all-star team. She wanted to know if MyBayCity was going to Caro to cover their district tournament. The more I talked with her, the more confused I got. Her grandsons are ten and eleven years old. So how could they be on the same team?

Little League does not allow ten year olds to play on the eleven and twelve year old major all-star teams. So I listened attentively, nodded politely and left puzzled determined to discover what changes have occurred in the three years I have been out of Little League.

I caught up with Randy Madison who is the area's District 14 Administrator. He explained the current Little League system. There are now three divisions in Little League play. The first division is the one we commonly see in Williamsport , PA. This is the 11 and 12 year old players. These are the boys who also compete for state titles beginning with districts. The State Champs move on to regional play with the winner going to the Little League World Series.

Another division is the 10 and 11 year old division. These boys start out in district play with the ultimate goal of achieving a state title.

The final division is the 9 and 10 year old division. This is what traditionally was referred to as the minors. As before, they begin with district play hoping to achieve a state title.

While a 10 or 11 year old may qualify for two all-star divisions, they can only play in one division per season.

Got it?

Not so fast. Which 11 and 12 year old team, or 9 and 10 year old team is he on? Several of the area leagues have sent two all-star teams in a division to districts. And because of the number of teams in a district, one 11 & 12 year old team will have to travel to Saginaw North Little League, while the other plays home at the Northwest Little League. The undefeated and one loss winners of those sub-districts will play at Saginaw North for the district title. These games are tentatively scheduled for July 16 assuming no weather cancellations.

All leagues but NELL have two teams playing in the 9 & 10 year old division. NELL has one team playing there. All leagues but NELL have a team playing at Caro in the 10 & 11 year old division. Finally, all teams but SELL have one team playing in the 11 & 12 year old division. SELL sends two teams to the major division. One team is made up of all 12 year olds and the other is made up of all 11 year olds.

The 11 & 12 year old division as well as the 9 & 10 year old division started play Monday, July 6. Those games are held at NWLL and Saginaw North for the major division while the minor division is hosted by NELL and Saginaw South LL. The 10 & 11 year old teams start Friday in Caro partly because there are fewer teams playing in that division.

Once you have figured out where your favorite team is playing, get out to the ball fields. Soak up some sun, enjoy the fellowship and cheer on your favorite Little Leaguer.

John-

Nice article. This web site is the best for Little League coverage and photos--far superior to the BC Times who basically only covers the 12 year old Little League.
