Tom Watson Was magnificent.
British Open Claret Jug.
Bob Ryan PTI (Pardon The Interruption) Friday, July 17, 2009 -- (If Tom Watson wins the British Open) --- It's Bad For Golf.
(Ryan's an idiot.)
Mike Tirico -- Golf Commentator -- Saturday, July 18, 2009 -- This (Watson's Performance at British Open)is "off the charts."
Paul Azinger -- Golf Commentator -- Saturday, July 18, 2009 -- The ball doesn't know how old you are . . .
Fifty-nine year-old Tom Watson did not win the British Open on Sunday. But Tom Watson did win the admiration of every former athlete, every aging athlete and damn near anyone with an interest in sports-related story-book endings.
With Watson on the 18th green, putting for par to win the British Open . . . I was up on my feet . . . pacing.
"Do it Tommy," I urged him on.
The putt didn't fall. Stewart Cink won in a playoff. I felt somehow saddened by the turn of events.
But Watson, who had already won the British Open a handful of times was more than gracious, more that charming and a darn nice guy during the after-match press conference.
For 4 days, it was all about Tom Watson.
And strangely, I didn't miss Tiger Woods at all on Saturday or Sunday.

O.J., Get back on that paddleball court. If Tom can do it, so can you!!!
(EDITOR's NOTE: The only way I could get back on a paddleball court was if I got a job as "clean-up crew" at the Bay Area Family Y . . . smile)
